The reactors are in trouble and with the wind blowing east. A massive pressure release will push a lot of it towards the NA west coast. If they go BOOM a lot of the fallout will be headed to the same place :(

Fool 03-12-2011 01:04

They're not going to BOOM.

Blowing east from the plants themselves is right out to sea, I believe.

triple 03-12-2011 01:10

apparently there's some geologists out there now saying it was a 9.1?

Fool 03-12-2011 01:12

This is true.
There's no danger of meltdown, just the venting of the steam.

Which isn't even that bad according to one expert.
It just sounds really bad.

There was a guy on CNN, I think, who was at the chernobyl site for 10 years after the accident. He was explaining things really well.

vawlk 03-12-2011 01:13

wtf is a prefecture?

LordMelkor 03-12-2011 01:14

It's amazing that something ~5000 miles away can have such a visible effect, albeit small:

Dresden 03-12-2011 01:35

I seriously doubt the radiation vapor is harmless. Hard to believe it's safe when the news still say corex(sp?) in the gulf was safe to spray for the oil.

Quote:

Tokyo Electric Power Co. started releasing radioactive gas from one of the reactors at a nuclear plant north of Tokyo and is preparing to conduct a similar operation at a second station after yesterday***8217;s quake.

Tokyo Electric, Asia***8217;s biggest power company, started venting gas from a containment section of the No. 1 reactor of its Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant north of Tokyo at about 9 a.m. local time, Akitsuka Kobayashi, a company spokesman, said by phone today.

Tokyo Electric has also started preparing to vent gas from the containment areas of four reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ni nuclear plant, spokesman Naoyuki Matsumoto said.
