Well if they're exposed(no water covering them) they're going to give off radiation regardless if they've melted down or not. They would drop water on them to stop radiation exposure. They're talking about the reactors melting down not the used rods, correct?

 the containment vessel that the reactors are in IS the sarcophagus... the term sarcophagus (that's fancy speak for tomb) came from the chernobyl meltdown. In the chernobyl meltdown there was no containment vessel, so workers had to build one on site after **** had hit the fan. They called it a sarcophagus because the workers tasked with building the containment vessel didn't live very long.

EDIT: who knows how they'll handle whatever it is that's going on with the spent fuel rods in #4, but I doubt they'll pull a soviet style response.

The japs have to admit defeat and seal it all up

Its an easy solution but a hard choice

Monkey_b 03-16-2011 17:47

the way things are going it sounds like they won't have much of a choice? and would that really take care of the problem?

Flyersfan 03-16-2011 17:49

They are a very proud people you see

Half of them didn't want to end ww2 after we nuked them

Goshin 03-16-2011 17:51

right
and whats a little radiation anyway?
hiroshima is a huge city again just 70 years after the fact

TEPCO announced the chance for re-criticality is not zero in the spent fuel pools.

The water is flooded with boric acid. If the water is boiling off and the rods are heating back up, there is a chance they could achieve that, especially if they were damaged in the explosion, or removed from their racks or the racks were damaged.

Monkey_b 03-16-2011 17:59

70 years is a ****ing lifetime *******

When I suggested that they might build a sarchophagus I meant that they were going to have to "fill in" the reactor core.

But of course, you already knew that didn't you?

JoMo 03-16-2011 18:01

TEPCO webcam of the reactor is back up... and just as I reloaded to make sure, getting a 503.

Anyway, it's here:

yea I BET U ALREADY KNOW THAT SKIPPERLICIUS

cause u should have telekinetic powers that tell you what somebody means to say without them actually saying it

Skipperlipicus 03-16-2011 18:02

actually i didn't know that. what do you mean "fill in" the reactor core? how does that work, and what does that have to do with building a sarcophagus?

Isn't it obvious?

They intend to fill it with the entire world supply of iodine! ;)

I think **** got real when there was a 9.0 earthquake

Skipperlipicus 03-16-2011 18:08

we give iodine to humans so that their bodies are so saturated with the stuff that they won't be able to absorb radioactive iodine released into the environment. somehow i doub't they're going to try and "fill in" the core with iodine, it wouldn't do anything. just come out and say it already, you don't have any idea what you're talking about - all the sunday school lessons spent writhing around in itchy woolen pants never prepared you for this.

Shoddy 03-16-2011 18:14

Currency markets are weird things. The Yen is at record highs vs. the dollar.

My bad. It wasn't my intent to belittle the direct effects of the earthquake and subsequent tsunamis, nor to trivialize prior events at Fukushima Daiichi. If we can believe what has been said prior, the worst case scenario (which it looks like is pretty ****ing imminent) though not as bad as what happened at Chernobyl will still be pretty damn bad. My comment was directed toward those workers who may very well be tasked with a solution that will most certainly result in their death, but potentially save thousands of others.

Monkey_b 03-16-2011 18:39

yea, that's gonna suck for certain people, but i'm sure they'll pick people who are old and compensate their families so well that it will be worth going out as heroes

how have scientists not devised uber-suits that can handle intense radiation yet? don't astronaut suits handle crazy radiation from the sun, etc.?

I think the problem would be in the weight. I mean, you could probably construct a fully lead-lined suit but who could wear it?

Maybe wit h a collaborative focused praying effort GOD will listen. :brows:

Mr.Beverage 03-16-2011 18:49

so the US head nuclear official believes based on his US guys that are in japan that there is no water in the spent fuel pond(s?). hype?

He thinks #4 is dry. They did not put any water in it.

In other news, clear on the webcam, which is either good, or really bad as it indicates that they either put water in the pools, or the pools have run dry.

i have no idea how much lead you would need to keep lethal doses of radiation out... but i'm sure if you get those olympic powerlifting beasts that can deadlift 1k+ lbs, and give them those exosuits that the marines have that make you 100x stronger... it would be a non-issue

K-Rex 03-16-2011 19:00

There ya go. Problem solved.

I'm going home now.

The obvious solution is...Gundams. ;)

Monkey_b 03-16-2011 19:05

seriously though, i don't see why people have to give up their lives... there really should be a suit that can handle those levels of radiation by now

slogg 03-16-2011 19:05

so all we need are theoretical exoskeletons lined in lead, worn by Magnus Magnussun

easy enough

Mr.Beverage 03-16-2011 19:08

everyone should weigh in on this question:

fukushima: hype or not hype?

JoMo 03-16-2011 19:11

IAEA released information on the spent fuel pools, these are usually kept between 25-40 C.

"no data" on #4 speaks volumes.

#5 and #6 have a shared generator that can circulate the water.

Mr.Beverage 03-16-2011 19:15

no data is closer to freezing than boiling

Mr.Beverage 03-16-2011 19:18

can you measure the temperature of water that isnt there in an area where you are not allowed to go?
