IRC difficulties

I havent been able to get ahold of bytor or PJ, maybe someone else can help.
When i try to connect to irc it will prompt me with

Connecting to irc.dynamix.com
Timeout connecting to server
Disconnecting from server irc.dynamix.com

i try to connect as hired, and only use a-z as my characters. Im on a college network and installed servie pack 2 from windows (dunno if that might have ne thing to do with it). Ne help is appreciated.
 
i have no idea, i only use a software firewall on a residential connection so for me i give some_application permission to send/receive on some_port(s) :/

[edit] i also don't use xp.
 
Yep, sounds like your college is blocking IRC, which is too common.

Test by opening a Windows console (AKA "DOS Window") and typing "telnet irc.dynamix.com 6667". You should see something like this:

:irc.dynamix.com NOTICE AUTH :*** Looking up your hostname...
:irc.dynamix.com NOTICE AUTH :*** Found your hostname (cached)

Type control-] (hold down control key and hit right-bracket key) to escape to telnet prompt and enter "quit" to exit telnet.

this is what i was given when i entered that line that u told me. What u told me to do, was it suppose to fix the probelm or just see if it was college network?
 
irc.dynamix.com is made up out of (3 i think) pooled servers on a round-robin IP address assignment.

One of them has been giving me crap for the past few days too.
