[T:V] Load Times

uhhh, you can't avoid loading times...it sort of takes time to unpack a map and other static objects...

maybe leave them unpacked? I don't really know anything about maps, but could you like have them precompiled to make it load faster?

Real-time lighting would be better than relighting the map every time it loads....so lets hope they add that. Or at least save the lighting information, its not like we have really dynamic maps that change round to round.

You should just build in a mini soldat type 2d tribes game to play while you're wating for a map to load or while you're on gen D or something. All the best console games have mini games -- DO it :p

:bump: ^^

I have to admit that I'm a huge fan of the lightning fast Tribes 1 load times!
T2 was much too long for me, maybe for computers these days its not so much a problem, but considering my computer was pretty much top end when I got it and Tribes 2 came out a month or so after the load times were very long.
Its not like I won't buy the game if it has long load times, but it would be a nice luxury I tells ya.

The problem is getting the amount of data off the hard drive and into memory. Hard drives are slow as shit relative to everything else in the computer.

Add in CRC checking and the like and it can take a bit.

As I have found going from 128MB to 392MB of RAM, more RAM = faster load times.

This is true too. Sometimes when you are loading a massive amount of data, it gets read from disk into RAM, then something you loaded earlier had to get paged to disk in order to make room for more data. More RAM = less disk access = more speed.

If people didn't know that already they shouldn't be complaining. Loading times are gonna be "long" with crc checking, but you wanna get rid of that...?
