History

UVALAN began as the brainchild of TribalWar poster and former z2 member Fugazni. The original plan was to hold a small 10 person LAN party in his home in mid February of 1998. Fugazni contacted Tom "Cheater" Szabo to invite him to attend and bring along a server box to host Cheater's Wayside at the party. Cheater then contacted Mark "old_skul" Szabo to help plan this event. Plans were put into motion, and the guest list quickly outgrew Fugazni's home. It was at this point that Cheater booked a ballroom at the Double Tree hotel in Charlottesville, Virginia to hold the first of his legendary LAN events. Notable attendees at the event would include many of z2's original members, alongside with much of the original posters on Tribalwar. A Starsiege Tribes tournament was held at the event, in which Team Applebees defeated Team Dennys, despite the fact that Juji was a ringer.

Almost immediately, Cheater and old_skul began preparations for another, larger event in Charlottesville. Once again, UVALAN 2 was held at the Double Tree hotel, but this time in a much larger room, with much more attendance. Notables among the crowd would include Bounty, Yankee, Ceiling Fan, Fool and much of the TW and TSN staff, including Colosus, Rayn, Ratorasniki, and Beatstick. At UVALAN 2, the grand prize was a much coveted spot on the Tribes 2 beta team. The tournament was won by Team 4 (Foreplay), after an all night double-elimination tournament, and the beta spot was won by Breaker by dueling it out against teammates. Other prizes would include various pieces of computer hardware, most notably a Voodoo 5 5500 video card.

After trying to squeeze 200 people in to the largest facility the Double Tree had to offer, UVALAN founders Cheater and old_skul decided it was time to find a larger venue in which to hold their now legendary event. The much more centrally located Westfields Marriot hotel & resort in Chantilly, Va was chosen for this purpose. UVALAN 3 was held, and the people rejoiced. Attendance nearly doubled for the newly relocated LAN party, and anyone who was anyone was there. At UVALAN 3, and all subsequent events, tournaments for both Tribes 1 and Tribes 2 were held. At UVALAN 5, there was even a cross generation match held between the winning teams of both tournaments. Also of note at UVALAN 5 was the introduction of Tribes: Vengeance and the alpha version available to play.

The year 2004 had a brief name change for event. TribalWars was born. A bi-coastal event with more than 600 Tribes community members in attendance (including BadMoFo) that was heralded as the greatest achievement in Tribes gaming history. Tournaments for Tribes 1, Tribes 2, and a beta version of Tribes: Vengeance were held at each location, with subsequent matches for the winners of each tournament against their counterparts from the opposite coast. Again up for grabs was a spot on the T:V closed beta team, and many pieces of high priced hardware.

Subsequent years of UVALAN showed a decline in attendance. Most experts attribute this to a lack of support among the community for the new Tribes: Vengeance and a decline in general playership for both iterations of the Tribes series. Despite these facts, Cheater and old_skul continued to hold their legendary events, and anyone who was anyone was there. Constant attendees would include the lucky millionaire Akuma, as well as his close friends Fancy_Cat, Glare, FSB_Spy, and many other notable TribalWar posters. Social activities were also much more prevalent in the later years of UVALAN, including, but not limited to, drinking, debauchery, man love, and illegal downloading of music, movies, and pornography.

UVALAN is remembered as perhaps the largest and most enjoyable of all gatherings attended by TribalWarriors, and will continue to live on in the hearts and minds that loved it so deeply.
