The Tribes 2 World Championship held in 2002 was the second and final Tribes World Cup to be held within the Tribes community. The Championship had teams and representatives from over 15 nations, spanning all the way around the globe.

Despite the controversy that plagued the final stages of the Championship, the vast bulk of the tournament was enjoyed by all the teams. With United States West being awarded the eventual winners.

The Administrators

The Administrators are those who were responsible for setting up the tournament in the first place and then ran the event.

Ultimately as things would have it, Imposter and Kelster vanished from the scene. Beren, Mega Boris and Suds ran the tournament, with the latter two being largely responsible for the controversy at the end as they outvoted Beren.

The Maps

Along with the Tribes 2 maps, two maps were created especially for the tournament by the best two Tribes mappers to ever play the game: DOX and Dave "Diamond Back" Meddish formerly of Dynamix. They are the maps known as Beach Blitz and Ascension. The maps were generally well received as maps, but some were not in favour of playing maps so soon after release in a tournament environment.

The Controversy

The Tournament progressed rather smoothly through the group and knockout stages, until the semi finals were reached. At this point mistakes were made that resulted in the tournament largely becoming a laughing stock of the Tribes community, although not a great deal of laugher was had by those involved.

The chain of events that caused this started with a meeting that was held in IRC between the captains from the USW and Australia teams, the administrator Beren, and the game referees. At this meeting the rules were agreed upon for the semi-final, laid out in a text file, and uploaded to the TWC web space. The rules detailed that victory would only be awarded based on flag captures and not based upon touches.

The game was held 2 maps were played on each Teams home server, with the Team hosting each game winning each map, leading into a stale mate according to the agreed to rules. However at this point team USW declared themselves winners and left much to the confusion of Team Australia.

It is at this point that the story can get a bit murky; as such here are the scenarios which are presented as to what occurred.

  1. Suds appeared on a team speak client chat to Team USW during the game and told them that Flag touches would count. This accounts for the many obvious suicide runs that were undertaken on the last map that Australia hosted.
  2. Team USW purely forgot that they had already agreed that flag touches would not be counted towards the result and innocently thought that they had won
  3. Some do not recall seeing Suds (European) online virtually at all that day, but do recall Mega Boris (American) online. Further he was online directly after the game officially saying that they had won, that he had been the one to tell team USW that flag touches count.

Whichever of these are the actual events that took place in some ways does not matter. The events that followed entailed Beren fruitlessly arguing the case of Team Australia as Mega Boris seemed extremely biased towards team USW, and Suds arguing that Flag touches should count. The time stamp and the rules agreed upon were shown to all still date from several days before the game taking place.

The events that followed was Beren posting a thread on the TribalWar Forums decrying the situation, calling foul play on behalf of the other admins trying to force an American team into the grand final. Marweas initially wrote Beren’s comments off, before eventually joining the vast bulk of the community in sharing the opinion that Australia was unfairly knocked out of the Grand Final. Marweas then in a gesture of goodwill to Team Australia sent them all a free t-shirt a week or so later. The rest of the community largely ignored the anti-climatic final between USW and Germany. USE had been disqualified also that week due to using exploits in their final against Germany.
