[WW3] North Korea fires missile over Japan in 'unprecedented threat'

Submitted by: Edofnor @ 10:29 PM | Monday, August 28, 2017 | (url: http://http://www...)

North Korea has fired a missile over northern Japan in a move Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called an "unprecedented" threat to his country.

The missile, launched early on Tuesday Korean time, flew over Hokkaido island before crashing into the sea.

The UN Security Council is expected to hold an emergency meeting in response.

No effort was made by the Japanese to shoot down the missile but it issued a safety warning telling citizens in Hokkaido to take shelter in "a sturdy building or basement".

US and Japanese forces are currently taking part in training drills in Hokkaido.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in ordered a show of "overwhelming" force in response to the launch. Four South Korean jets staged a live bombing drill on Tuesday.

Mr Abe said he had spoken to US President Donald Trump and that both agreed to increase pressure on North Korea.

Mr Abe called the launch an "outrageous act" and an "unprecedented, serious and grave threat [that] greatly damages regional peace and security".

He said his government was doing its utmost to protect people's lives.

North Korea's conventional and nuclear weapons programmes are a breach of international sanctions, so the test is being seen as a major provocation and an escalation of tensions on the Korean peninsula.

In other reaction:

A meeting of South Korea's National Security Council (NSC) was convened to discuss the issue, Yonhap reported.
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson expressed "outrage" at North Korea's "reckless provocation".
Australia has condemned the launch as a "provocative, dangerous, destabilising and threatening act".
The Pentagon said that Tuesday's test did not represent a threat to the US and the military was now working to gather more intelligence about it.

Having a meeting with North Korea would be like stepping into a room with Cersei Lannister.

I would feel that it would be a coin flip that I would even make it out alive.

If I miss my flip, I'll get tortured into becoming a vegetable, then sent back to the states as a living corpse.

No thanks.

Wow. It only took a couple of days to upgrade to a new form of bomb. How long did it take the US and USSR to develop this type of weapon? We should have the North Koreans run NASA. They could probably create an interstellar warp drive in a couple of weeks.

This looks like a cylinder and wedge type bomb.

Yup, when the going gets tough, just tell everyone you have nukes...

North Korea is going to start colonizing outer space before all of us now at this rate.

We need to step up our game.

Declaring that “enough is enough,” Ms Haley said incremental sanctions imposed on Pyongyang since 2006 had failed and accused dictator Kim Jong-un of “begging for war.”

War is never something the United States wants. We don’t want it now. But our country’s patience is not unlimited,” she declared.

But lets make hay while the sun shines boys!

America never wants war. Except in Korea. Or in Vietnam. or in Cuba. Or in Grenada. Or when it sicced Saddam Hussein on the Iranians, resulting in the deaths and grievous wounds of millions. Or when it grew tired of Saddam Hussein and attacked him. Or when it attacked Afghanistan for no discernible reason. Or when it attacked Saddam Hussein again after first starving a million Iraqis over the preceding decade. Or when it overthrew the democratic government of Ukraine, starting a civil war, which it then blamed on Russia. Or when it created ISIS to overthrow Gaddafi in Libya and Assad in Syria, an organization which has to date killed and maimed thousands and thousands of people, sending millions fleeing for their lives, a price that Europe must pay.

America never wants war. But America has always been at war.

But then if you flip it over you start to ask questions like, where did all this technology suddenly come from?

And then it begins to look like Russia is being really aggressive. They have armed North Korea and North Korea is doing some pretty aggressive, odd things with what they have been given.

The Ukraine and Syria start to look like the springboard for the new colder war. Diplomats in Cuba are being targeted by sonic attacks from presumed Russian sources, and we are closing Russian consulates in the US. Chemical weapons are used in Syria, and we bomb Syrian bases where Russian planes are.

The Chinese are still sitting on those man made islands in the South China Sea and there is nothing that can be done about it. Putin can turn around to his people and point a finger back at President Trump and point to his policies and say he's a racist and a nationalist, and that they need Putin in power (to do whatever he wants) to protect them from the new Hitler.

For a situation American supposedly started, a lot seems to be going against the US. If something is orchestrated well, eventually, even the tardiest of national strategist must admit that as an end result, certain countries have undisputedly gained a great deal from it, while others are locked in perpetual waves of reactivity and crisis over a new, seemingly artificially created situation regarding defense.

Even Israel, who should know better seems to be selling gold to North Korea, a country operating death camps, to someone in power there who can put it elsewhere (like Switzerland) when they flee into exile. Well, the Nazis did it once.

North Korea is just a mechanized Mongol horde. That's all its ever been since 1950. It's the same type of social apparatus used by the Germans in WW2 and the Russians as they swept back against them. Besides the giant military fist, almost nothing else has been done to make the country a better place to live. Every project they have done has mostly benefitted the military or elite.

The examples of Iraq and Libya have convinced the North Korean leadership that only nuclear deterrence can protect them, so no sanctions can dissuade them, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

Pyongyang will not relinquish its military program under pressure of sanctions and military threats, because the examples of Iraq and Libya have convinced it that nuclear deterrence is the only credible way to ensure its security, President Putin told journalists on Tuesday.

“Ramping up military hysteria in such conditions is senseless; it’s a dead end,” he added. “It could lead to a global, planetary catastrophe and a huge loss of human life. There is no other way to solve the North Korean nuclear issue, save that of peaceful dialogue.”

The 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq and the 2011 NATO intervention in Libya both came after the leaders of those countries submitted to international pressure and relinquished their programs of weapons of mass destruction in exchange for sanctions relief.

North Korea for its part chose confrontation with the world community, successfully developing nuclear weapons and currently, rapidly perfecting the means of their delivery.

“As I told my colleagues yesterday, they will eat grass but will not stop their program as long as they do not feel safe,” Putin said. “What can restore their security? The restoration of international law.”
