TitanFall - Respawn Entertainments (ex-Infinity Ward) new game

Submitted by: Got Haggis? @ 09:30 AM | Thursday, June 6, 2013 | (url: http://www.neogaf...)

TitanFall is the new game from Respawn Entertaiment, which is made up of ex Infinity Ward develoeprs (CoD) - this was the studio that was created by just about all of IW leaving Activision (and then Activision sueing them and EA)

It is developed in the Source Engine and is coming out for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC only. Outsourcing Xbox 360 development.

Sounds interesting

- Spring 2014 Release Date
- There are a good amount of screens. In my opinion it visually looks pretty nice.
- First person shooter
- "Mech" and ground combat
- "Mech's" are called Titans.
- They want these Titans to feel fast. They can dodge etc.
- If you don't want to pilot the Titan you can have it follow you, killing people as it goes along.
- Player characters are called Pilots
- They are extremely agile. Can run on walls, multiple jumps.
- They can take down Titans. Jumping on them and shooting the "brain".
- You need to be cunning as a pilot. "Hit and fade" tactics is the term the game director uses.
- Pilots come equipped with a variety of weapons. Pistol, Assault Rifle, Anti-Titan Rocket Launcher, data knife used to hack AI characters into joining you.
- There are AI enemies on the maps.

I'm in if they add jetpacks and I can imagine I'm playing the Starseige and Tribes crossover I've always wanted.

Surprising that they're using Source, I kind of figured Source-based development outside Valve was dead until the eventual new version of the engine. I guess it's consistent with the Infinity Ward dudes' habit of sticking with an old engine they know really well. Just have to wonder how good it'll look compared to Valve's efforts with the engine.

Snubbing the PS4 and using the Diablo 3 always online excuse of offloading AI to dedicated servers.

My bullshit detector is at 9000 on that last one.

Sounds like Hawken using the source engine, which depending on how heavily they've modified it isn't up to the task of large outdoor areas.

Despite how nice the graphics are in Hawken I've never gotten into the stompy mech suit vibe.

FINALLY MY TIME HAS COME.

I don't think using the cloud for dedicated servers is bullshit. Offloading physics calculations sure, but you can't deny that having a server host the game world instead of the player leaves a lot of work off the console.

It's also the only way to counter cheaters. If the server controls most of the game world, the client can't do much to fuck with it.

If we were talking some massive number of AI entities then perhaps, this just sounds like the lame excuse that EA used for Sim City - which has been proven to be complete bullshit as you can play the game offline.

It also explains why EA did away with the online code thing, between this alleged offloading of game code to the "cloud" and MS putting in place an activation/deactivation system for used games where EA gets money on games being resold they don't need online codes anymore.

No PS4 version perhaps confirms that Sony really isn't going to shit on used game sales.

don't bank on it, EA especially has a bad track record for security. Why should anyone care if someone wants to cheat at single player.

I'm talking about Dedicated Servers being hosted in "the cloud" instead of this peer to peer bullshit that most console games are doing this generation. The AI/Physics stuff makes sense to a point, but that would only really matter in an MMO or something I think.

Multiplayer could still be peer to peer, sounds like they're talking dedicated servers for single player. i.e. sim city, diablo 3 etc.

Now that would just be fucking dumb. I could understand it for both Multi and Single, but there's no way it would make sense to do Multi locally/peer and Single in the cloud.
