Unit sales of Blu-ray Discs in the first three months of 2009 nearly doubled, compared to the same period last year, according to Adams Media Research.
Monterey, Calif.-based Adams said the high-definition format tallied about 9 million units through March, compared to 4.8 million units in 2008. There are about 10.5 million BD-enabled households, including about 7 million to 8 million dedicated BD players.
At least twice as many homes have a BD player, so it is very expectable that it would double or more, Adams said.
Despite Blu-rays strong start, Adams said the Blu-ray sales do not offset declines in DVD revenue.
He also said that due to the recession, the format is rolling out slower than DVD, although faster than VHS.

Not surprising. Wal-Mart sold all their Magnavox (heh, crap) Blu-Ray players at $128 from thanksgiving to Christmas. That put it pretty much in half of those households.
Gee... who'd a thunk'd it...
eliminate all competition... and sales magically increase in your favor.

Drop the prices below $150 and see what happens.

According to a Blu-ray.com report, Chinese manufacturers are preparing to enter the market for the high-definition video players, and this development could mean very aggressive prices for low-end Blu-ray hardware. The Blu-ray Disc Association recently began licensing Blu-ray technology in China, a move that has led Samsung marketing director Mark Leathan to speculate that $99 players aren't far off, the report states.
Yep. I'll do they same if they get around $99. The cheapest ones I can buy right now are terrible Sony ones that apparently take several minutes to load anything, which is unacceptable. Plus, there's a chance that Chinese-manufactured ones will be able to skip ads...
