Google Losing up to $1.65M a Day on YouTube

Google is spending more than $2 million a day on YouTube -- and it is nowhere near seeing a return on that investment. Indeed, it may be losing up to $1.65 million daily on the video site.

According to financial firm Credit Suisse and Internet measurement provider comScore Inc. , YouTube Inc. is on track to serve 75 billion video streams to 375 million unique visitors in 2009.

That's the good news. The bad? To support those visitors, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) will spend more than $2 million dollars daily -- to be exact, up to $2,064,054 a day, or $753 million annualized, according to Internet Evolution calculations of YouTube's costs derived from a range of sources, including Bear Stearns & Co. Inc. , comScore, Credit Suisse, and Google itself.

How much does Google make in a day though?

That may be a lot of overhead in sheer dollars but YouTube is one of the single most popular sites on the internet.

They're working on getting money from it, the adds in movies nad music deff. has some effect. Sometime in teh future, we'll all pay micropayments to watch crap, probably in the tenths of a cent.

The thing is that people probably wouldn't mind paying $5 a month to use youtube; further, Universities would gladly sign contracts.

Unfortunately, if this ever does go to a pay system, it will be some outrageous price like $.25 a video. The day they do something like that, and people will look elsewhere.

...that's for sure.

Googles stock price is so insanely inflated. They spent 1.65 Billion to purchase youtube. Im just waiting for that bubble to burst.

they just need to add a paying porn section

I'm sure they just chalk it up as marketing expense. YouTube may be costly, but Google can market its other services on YouTube as well. I'm not sure if it does because I don't ever visit YouTube.

I've been saying from the get-go that the decentralized distribution method of bittorrent is the only efficient way to spread data across the vicissitudes of the internet. All other methods are too costly.

This is why they started putting ads on it.

Rumours that Jewtube will go the megavideo route, where you can only watch 75mins a day then are forced to buy a 'premium account'. Lol. Paying for youtube.

okay, now what about all the porn streaming sites?
