Nintendo Faces Patent Suit over Wiimote

Nintendo's hit Wii console with its wandlike remote controller has been targeted in patent infringement complaints by a U.S. technology company.

Hillcrest Laboratories, based in Rockville, Md., has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington D.C., and a patent infringement lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Maryland against Nintendo Corp., the company said in a statement Wednesday.

Kyoto-based Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa said Thursday the Japanese video game company has not yet received the lawsuit and had no comment.

Hillcrest is accusing Nintendo of infringement in four patents dealing with technology for a handheld three-dimensional pointing device and a display interface system for organizing graphic content on a TV, it said.

Where does it address the question why they waited over 2 years to bring this up?

For fuck sakes, someone quash these bullshit lawsuits already. It is becoming a common plan to make money by abusing the spirit of the law. Just because Nintendo came up with an idea similar to the one you thought of (but made nothing of) using common place technology... doesn't mean Nintendo stole anything from you.

Inspiration for a good idea isn't limited simply to the first person to physically think of it and certainly not the first person to get a little certificate printed with a date on it.

They are bringing this up because of the first lawsuit regarding Nintendo controllers.

If the company hasnt started astualyl producing the product, they wont be able to touch a portion of the profits, but more than likely get some tiny damage award, and maybe, in some small cases, a small licensing fee.
