Hate Vista? Try "Mojava"

Submitted by: KnightMare @ 03:08 AM | Sunday, July 27, 2008 | (url: http://news.cnet....)

Spurred by an e-mail from someone deep in the marketing ranks, Microsoft last week traveled to San Francisco, rounding up Windows XP users who had negative impressions of Vista. The subjects were put on video, asked about their Vista impressions, and then shown a "new" operating system, code-named Mojave. More than 90 percent gave positive feedback on what they saw. Then they were told that "Mojave" was actually Windows Vista.

What I find interesting about these videos is that they never showed what was actually shown to these people, nor how it was showed. The specs of the machine it was demonstrated on was also not addressed.

And I'm certain none of these people were ever asked to address the potential issues that arise from using older hardware or software on the system, or upgrading hardware, or finding drivers, or addressing issues caused by UAC.

The fact that these people didn't even recognize what they were using was Vista was also very telling - if you look at a computer screen demonstrating Vista, and don't recognize Windows Vista, then they might just as well have used Windows Blinds on WindowsXP and told them it was a new operating system, and they'd probably have fallen for that too.

And for all intensive purposes they probably used some high end machine, if they were demonstrating this on the $400 eMachines desktop that most people would be buying they'd have viewed it quite differently.

Lastly, how do you address the long-term implications of upgrading to Vista? These people saw Vista at face value, they got to see the cool sidebars, maybe voice recognition, the new start menu layout. But seriously, until you own the product for a week, or even a month, you really don't know what you're dealing with.

People don't say Windows Vista is shit because they don't like the eye candy that goes with it, they say it's shit because the problems it inherently creates by it's forced security measures and lack of backwards compatibility. It's one thing to replace your computer, but suddenly finding out that your existing hardware won't run on Vista because drivers aren't being made to make your hardware works is hardly worth looking forward to.

There's nothing that can be done in Windows Vista that I see is worth the asking price. Even after the price drop. There's a handful of things I think are "neat", but none of those neat things are things I would ever use. And half the features I think are "neat" aren't even supported by all versions of Vista - Aero, making your desktop background a video file, the security encryption options.

Not to mention, Windows Vista is still susceptible to viruses and spyware, and the damage caused by such viruses and spyware that would hinder WindowsXP from working can literally cripple Vista to where the system shell can't even function.

There's nothing in Windows Vista that I can't get, for free, from a popular Linux distro - purely from a productivity standpoint.

My name is Lindsey and I work with the Windows Vista team. I would be happy to share our customer videos from the "Mojave Experiment". They can be found at The "Mojave Experiment".

Thank you

so a bunch of ignorant computer literate people who hated vista simply from word of mouth, try vista on a single laptop for like what 15min and now they love it. I think MS targeted Bush voters.

If you did the same thing with linux you would get the same reaction from these people.

The vast majority buy what ever comes on their dell, and for the most part MS decides what comes on their dell. I hope a CIO of some company wouldn't be that stupid though.

yeah and alot of those people are asking for xp instead of vista because they think vista sucks and dell gives it to them. Its would be stupid not to target those users.
