BioWare technical producer Derek French has said that the PC versions of both Mass Effect and Spore will make use of copy protection that will require online validation every ten days to continue working.
If customers do not come online after ten days, the game will cease to function. "After 10 days a re-check is required before the game can run"

I plan to buy Spore, but looks like I'll have to find a crack for it if this comes to fruition.
I was going to pay full price for spore, but if they fag it up with copyright shit, I'm going to steal it.
oh hey, now you HAVE to have the internet to play single player games
wonderful
(yes, spore is not entirely single player, but still, fuck that)

shit like this is so ridiculous.
nearly any software security features that can be created by man can be cracked by man (and usually cracked much faster than created). the "unbreakable" dvd encryption that they spent millions of dollars creating got cracked within 24 hours.
the more they try to pull annoying shit like this, the more they bring cs geeks out of the woodwork that are willing to make cracking progs just for the hell of it.

but as far as spore goes, you'll need to be online anyways to get user created civs throughout the universe.
well i don't blame them
there is almost no incentive to produce games for the pc platform - everyone is just a cheap faggot who will torrent it
cheap ass gamers will be the death of pc gaming. gg.

well i don't blame themSomeone will crack it. Someone always cracks it. One-time activation is just as hard to crack (as in not), but it's less obnoxious.

Fuck that.
Personally, if I want a game, I'll buy it- unless the publishers do faggoty things like this, in which case I will go out of my way to steal it; case in point, Half-Life 2, Sins of a Solar Empire and, apparently, Spore.

I guess it's easier to assume it's has some faggy protection in it and steal it cause that's what he was going to do anyways.
Oops, guess I did just steal that one then. Ah well. I don't have it anymore, I suppose I will have to get round to buying it if I want to play it again.
Ugh, it will be so easily to circumvent this. Even so, someone who pirates it likely won't spend more than 10 days playing it. Again, only legitimate customers get fucked.
