Tesla has coast to coast coverage with super charge stations now

Submitted by: Goshin @ 09:22 AM | Wednesday, January 29, 2014 | (url: http://watchplayr...)

You can drive from west to east for free if you own a Tesla S
takes 30 minutes to charge 170 miles, so stopping every 3 hours. I guess it'll keep you regular for bathrooms and food.
They plan on having EVEN MORE stations by 2015.

[qoute]The Model S is known to have an operating range of 265 EPA certified miles, 170 of which can be recharged (for free mind you) within 30 minutes of being plugged in. This means that essentially every pit stop that you take on your road trip allows time to recharge and stretch your legs while not costing you anything in gas. Right now, there are 71 stations active and is now possible for you to travel from one coast to the other via the network of charging stations.

By 2015, Tesla plans on having 98% of the United States covered with access to the power stations[/quote]

Department of Defense Buys 2,2000 PS3s

Submitted by: XTasy @ 01:05 AM | Monday, November 30, 2009 | (url: http://gizmodo.co...)

Apparently the Department of Defense believes that PS3s are a better value when it comes to supercomputers than IBM products specifically designed for the purpose. Granted recent price drops probably didn't hurt in justifying a 2,200 console order either.

This isn't the first time that the DoD is using PS3 consoles for supercomputing. In fact, these 2,200 units are going to be added to an existing Linux cluster of 336 PS3s used by the United States Air Force. According to Justification Review Documents, the purchase is all about getting the best value out the DoD's budget:

With respect to cell processors, a single 1U server configured with two 3.2GHz cell processors can cost up to $8K while two Sony PS3s cost approximately $600. Though a single 3.2 GHz cell processor can deliver over 200 GFLOPS, whereas the Sony PS3 configuration delivers approximately 150 GFLOPS, the approximately tenfold cost difference per GFLOP makes the Sony PS3 the only viable technology for HPC applications.

I'm all for balancing cost and features, but isn't it just a bit curious that someone thought to save on upgrading the supercomputer just after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was released?

Sony launches PlayStation 'Home' Virtual Community

Submitted by: DVADER @ 10:04 AM | Thursday, December 11, 2008 | (url: http://money.cnn....)

Sony Corp.'s much delayed virtual community for owners of its PlayStation 3 game console will start worldwide Thursday, but it's unlikely to attract many newcomers to the machine, company officials said.

The free-of-charge PlayStation Home service is mainly meant to make gaming more fun for people who already own the PS3, they said.

Junji "JB" Shoda, a Sony Computer Entertainment Japan vice president, who oversees Home, said Wednesday the service isn't meant to rival virtual worlds like Linden Lab's "Second Life," which can be played on personal computers and has drawn millions of people.

Compared to the previous games GTA IV will be looking to significantly expand its base multiplayer options. This time around up to 16 players will be able to play together in 15 multiplayer modes ranging from Races to Cops N Crooks. All of these modes will feature a robust set of customizable options that can be set by the host. Players will also be able to fully customize their online characters so there won't be 16 Nikos running around.

If the game hits PCs as expected later this year these built in features will no doubt be a boon to the mod community.
