The Great Games Contest

Submitted by: Colosus @ 03:47 PM | Sunday, January 28, 2007 | (url: )

Great Games, Great Community, Great Contest

TribalWar and GarageGames are proud to announce a contest for a brand new site dedicated to bringing developers, gamers, and publishers together with great games: GreatGamesExperiment.com To create your account and get started head over to www.GreatGamesExperiment.com and use the promo code TribalWarGGE.

GarageGames is going beyond development tools to try to change the industry using the entire community of indie gamers. Great games deserve to be played, regardless of budget or bureaucracy. No one company or part of the community can do it alone. Gamers, developers, and publishers must unite to bring every essential component of the indie game process together.

Contest, Categories, Prizes

Here's a link to the contest categories and prizes, which include a 4G iPod Nano and 2 free passes to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco!

If you're reading this the contest has already started, this round ends on February 5th. GGE will be having a new contest every week leading up to a two week contest after its full release to the public on March 4th, so there will be plenty of chances to win increasingly great prizes.

Gamers Wanted

Why are we giving away so much free stuff to a limited group of people? GGE is a community site, and therefore requires active community participation to thrive. We have the content, and now we're looking to get the gamers. Without gamers -- developers would have nobody to show their stuff off to. Gamers on GGE aren't limited to playing games that have already been posted. If a game can be found, it can be posted -- there are few limits to the games that community members can add. Having a large initial user base comprised of developers and gamers will help to ensure that GGE will indeed result in a site that is dedicated to being the catalyst that drives the video game industry into the next generation of gaming.

Promote, Network, Discover, Download, Play

The goal of GGE is to be an all-in-one community for everything a lover of great games could want from a site. Promote your game; network with other developers and gamers; discover new games and old favorites; download free games and demos, or make yours available to others; play games and share your passion with an active community created for that very purpose.

Trajan posted a note on the official Starsiege 2845 that we can expect the Starsiege ATR release on October 18th:

The ATR will be released for download on Filefront on Wednesday, October 18th. Final file size is yet to be determined but it will almost certainly be quite large. Some assets may be removed and put up as optional separate downloads if need be to keep the file size small enough to fit on a CD.

Team Fortress 2 Gameplay video

Submitted by: Got Haggis? @ 06:28 PM | Sunday, January 14, 2007 | (url: )

It looks like the gameplay video of TF2 was released a bit early. It's not on Steam yet, but you can stream a version from this site. Personally, I'm looking forward to TF2. This video made the wait that much harder.

Looking for the 1.4 patch for BF2?

Submitted by: Got Haggis? @ 06:28 PM | Saturday, January 13, 2007 | (url: )

As many of you know, the 1.4 patch for Battlefield 2 was due to arrive today. Apparently, this is not the case. It will be delayed at least 24 hours due to some last minute bug squashing. This information was sent to the bf2 ranked server mailing list, but apparently will not be made public. EA really knows how to manage their community, don't they?

Shacknews interview with GarageGames

Submitted by: Got Haggis? @ 06:28 PM | Saturday, January 13, 2007 | (url: )

Chris Remo, from Shacknews, had the chance to sit down with GG CEO/CTO Joshua Williams and GG president Mark Frohnmayer:

Mark Frohnmayer: We're about to release our first actual legimitate casual game that we developed in house. It just went into beta last week. We're about to release a new set of levels for Marble Blast Ultra on Xbox 360. We did a whole new set of multiplayer maps that are actually a lot of fun. Then we have another game that's in the early stages of development that's going to totally rock. We will give you much more information on that as we get closer. Shack: Anything related to Tribes? I'm sure you guys get asked that every day. Mark Frohnmayer: It actually is in a lot of ways a gameplay homage to Tribes, but it's a very different genre. Joshua Williams: It's going to be cool. Mark Frohnmayer: It will be cool.
So what do you guys think, will it be cool? ;) Read the full interview here

Enemy Territory: Tribal Wars?

Submitted by: Got Haggis? @ 06:28 PM | Thursday, January 11, 2007 | (url: )

So if you attending Quakecon this past weekend (and really, why would you when UVALAN was going on??) you may have seen ET: Quake Wars and noticed that the Strogg have jetpacks. Well, one of our forum members, afex, pointed out that the Icarus (the Strogg jetpack-vehicle) has a function that works a lot like skiing in Tribes. Well I went over to the Splash Damange forums to do a little "trolling", and much to my suprise, one of the devs replied.

I was fully expecting (and hoping!) that someone would do a Tribes mod when I was writing the skiing code. As it currently stands it is a more noob-friendly form of skiing (more T:V-esque), which was done in an effort to make it actually usable for people that aren't part of the Tribes-hardcore community I'm intending to kick-start any Tribes mod's development after release myself by integrating the player & Icarus physics and reworking the skiing to be more like T1 (my favourite). I'd then release that code to the public so y'all can take it from there - I'm a Tribes fanatic from way back so I'd love to see a decent Tribes mod for the game! Most of the groundwork is all there - easily moddable weapons, character classes, vehicles, support for massive terrains, etc. With the kickstart of the physics then I'm convinced that a dedicated team could whip out a prototype Tribes mod in a pretty short timespan.
Needless to say, I suspect this news is music to the ears of many Tribes fans. Read the full reply here.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars delayed until 2007

Submitted by: Got Haggis? @ 06:28 PM | Thursday, January 11, 2007 | (url: )

Gamespy is running a developer diary from Paul 'Locki' Wedgwood, the owner of Splash Damage. Bad news for those of us that were looking forward to playing this over the holidays: it's been delayed until 2007.

Following E3, Splash Damage and id spent weeks reviewing the status of Enemy Territory. 2006 has been a great year for us, with incredible response from the press and the community. It's also been a challenging year, as the team here has given extraordinary effort towards completing the game this year. Unfortunately, sometimes effort isn't all you need -- sometimes you just need more time. To ensure the quality we want, we've decided to push the release out of 2006 to allow for extended testing, feedback and game balancing.
No one likes delays, but if the delay will make ET: Quake Wars a better game, then I am all for it. The last thing we need is another game with a rollback patch. Read the full diary at Gamespy

Securities and Exchange Commission launching an investigation into Take-Two.

Submitted by: Got Haggis? @ 06:28 PM | Thursday, January 11, 2007 | (url: )

Kotaku has word that the SEC are launching an investigation into Take-Two Interactive:

The Securities and Exchange Commission has launched an "informal non-public investigation" into Take-Two. The investigation is looking into certain stock option grants made by the company from Jan. 1997 to the present, according to Take-Two.
I can say one thing for sure: I am glad I do not own any stock in Take-Two. After the 'hot-coffee' drama, how much more can this company take? Read the full article here.

Prey demo this week!

Submitted by: Got Haggis? @ 09:15 AM | Monday, June 19, 2006 | (url: )

Human Head will be releasing a demo of Prey this Wednesday at 9pm PST! In addition to single player (which should take roughly 45 minutes to complete), it will also include a multiplayer map or two. Pretty crazy to think Prey will see the light of day before Duke Nukem Forever! In case you don't remember, Prey started development at 3D Realms.
