Dave Returns!

Submitted by: Calliope @ 12:18 PM | Wednesday, June 21, 2000 | (url: )

Dave Georgeson, our Dynamix-deity, has returned to his Hey! forum thread with many more answers to our Tribes 2 questions. These are selections, chosen to give a sweeping overview of the indepth responses provided by Dave:

We hate making certain things totally automated. Being able to hide with a flag is a good thing. We're adding things to make it harder to hide though...but those things require human involvement (a good thing) instead of automatic detection by waypoint (a bad thing).

"Positive" chats are being implemented. As well as some decidedly "negative" ones.

Yes, the GUI is getting MAJORLY overhauled (especially the command map). Commands to repair turrets take anywhere from 2-3 mouse clicks. That's it. Bots respond quickly to commands, but will occasionally ignore them if they have higher priority objectives. They will however TELL you when they're ignoring you. Ground vehicles now all have wheels. We liked them better that way. You don't swap vehicle barrels...you buy them with different barrels initially (at the vehicle station). No...the APC can't carry ground vehicles. We'll leave that for Halo. No...weight doesn't affect speed. No info on the beta test list method yet. Ladders will be straightforward and MAY be built in (even though I previously said they would not be).

the minimap is a balancing act between gameplay and framerate. Believe it or not, minimaps (good ones) really suck up the framerate. Plus, there is something to be said for the slight awkwardness of having to flip to the command map for an overview of the situation. I know it would be more efficient to get an overview at all times, but it really changes the gameplay. In my opinion, it's actually better gameplay to have a bit of situational un-awareness unless you switch to the sensor net view in the command map. I know many of you will disagree, but we've talked about this several times in-house and we intend to leave it the way it is. For now anyway...
That's it for the front page, but trust me, you don't want to forget about the rest of this info. To check it all out, visit the forum thread here.

I'm looking for a new way to say .. Thanks Dave!!!

T2 Preview and Screenshots

Submitted by: Calliope @ 12:07 PM | Wednesday, June 21, 2000 | (url: )

Fragzone has posted a short preview of the much anticipated Tribes 2, and has included in their posting what seem to be three all new bioderm screenshots. Here's the snippit .. check it out for yourself. Oh, and keep in mind that these guys use English as a second language, so be gentle on the writing :

Dynamix is currently busy developing Tribes 2, the sequel that will be distributed by Sierra. In Tribes 2 you will find an improved graphics engine with better models, fog, lightning and larger levels. The long awaited rocket launcher will be included, but will function as a slow firing Anti-air weapon .. Tribes 2 looks like a sure winner, and games like Halo and Team Fortress 2 will have a hard time climbing on top of it.

Thanks, Machine Gun Joe!

Framerate HUD From Crunchy

Submitted by: figgs @ 11:42 AM | Wednesday, June 21, 2000 | (url: )

Crunchy sent this over, about a new HUD that displays various information about your FPS, as an update to VekTor's FPS hud.

I'd been using FPS HUD by VekTor for a while. I noticed it had some
problems, such as freezing after a mission change. I decided I'd update the HUD for NewOpts / HUD Mover support. BigBunny then suggested showing average fps which got me thinking. I then continued adding features that I thought of. I had some problems with the fps fluctuating wildly when you first join a mission or if you used the options menu so I developed a system to disable tracking whilst playGui was closed.

FrameRate HUD displays in-game fps stats. It shows current fps, average fps, highest fps and lowest fps, for the current mission. The icons change colour depending on how good the fps is, green means good, yellow is acceptable and red is bad.

The HUD requires Writer's Support Pack. The pack provides support scripts that other scripts such as this HUD can use, without forcing you to use the features in Writer's main pack.

Colosus sent in word letting people know that despite hosting problems, TribesCon 2k is still up and running and getting closer. Here's what he had to say:

"First off to answer everyone's question, yes we are still here and yes we will still be having fun on June 30th. The signup form still works and we are still looking for more people. We have 59 souls that are ready to go, but are looking for 100+

New prizes have been donated and some hardware is being provided to provide a smooth ride for everyone. We also have computer rentals available through Bit-By-Bit. You can contact me for more information about that. I would like to thank everyone for being so patient with us through these tough times. Hope to see you all there.

Tribes Time Demo Script Released

Submitted by: Imposter @ 08:52 PM | Monday, June 19, 2000 | (url: )

Triston has released a script that will allow people to finally compare Frames Per Second in Tribes on a more even basis. Here's what he had to say:

"I wrote a script tonite called TimeDemo.cs. The basical functionality of it is this... watch a demo, it calculates from the start of a map to the end of a map the:
A. Lowest Achieved FPS
B. Highest Achieve FPS
C. Average FPS
D. # of FPS Samples.

It grabs a sample twice per second, or every 0.5 seconds. This script was tested with a .rec file I grabbed from the TW archive. 5150 vs. S3 - StoneHenge. The #3 demo of all time. This is considered the TimeDemo.rec. All future FPS recordings reported by me will be based on that demo. It is a high paced, 20 person game of CTF tribes in an OGL setting, which is what most of us play.
For more information on installation and how it works and how to get it, check out this thread in our forums, and get it from the horse's mouth.

Jail Break

Submitted by: Imposter @ 01:49 PM | Monday, June 19, 2000 | (url: )

Nagorak sent word today of the release of a new game type for Tribes, Jail Break.

"As many of you may or may not know, Jail Break was a popular mod for Quake II, the goal of which was to capture the enemy team and confine them to your jail. I have now created a similar mod for Tribes with a few modifications and additions of my own.

The same premise still exists, capture members of the enemy team by killing them. There's only one catch, you can only capture people using the ELF gun or Blaster. If you kill using anything else, you'll be assigned a murder instead which will make your stay in jail longer if you are captured. Prisoners you capture are also paroled from prison after their jail term has been completed, so you'll have to hunt them down and capture them again. Oh, and be sure to keep your prison generators safe, unless you want all of your inmates to escape (you wouldn't want that). "
For more information, and to download this new game type, head over to: http://members.home.com/nagorak/jailbreak.html.

Good Morning, Dave

Submitted by: Calliope @ 11:44 AM | Monday, June 19, 2000 | (url: )

The following is still more Tribes 2 information from a man who is fast becoming a deity in my book at least, Dave "QIX" Georgeson. He posts the following selections in a thread on our forums in response to forumite questions:

Predefined attack routes are not supported right now. We want some stuff to have to be coordinated through team practices.

manned turrets is one of my personal hot buttons. It may not make it into T2, but look for it as an add-on or in T3 at the least.

cloaking pack is jamming and cloaking all in one. The jamming cloak, by itself, was rarely used by players because it just wasn't worth not having a shield pack or energy pack instead. The cloak pack IS worth it though and will get a lot of useage.

the blaster may be going the way of the dodo. It depends on how well the new weapons work out.

AWACs scout allows commanders to "see" opponents and objects on their sensor net that they normally could NOT see. Therefore, they can issue commands on those targets from the commander screen. It's also very good for hunting down someone hiding out in the boonies outside the normal sensor net. Also, T2 sensor nets will not be as extensive as in T1 maps, although users can set up new sensors to enlarge that net if they so desire. AWACs scouts can give temporary coverage to areas with flyovers until the sensor net has been enlarged.

a target has to be a specific percentage of your screen-size before your sensor net acknowledges it as an enemy. If you stare at someone in zoom, but he's still too small to register, then he doesn't get added.
That's it for this post, but there's three times the amount of info on the thread itself. Interested? Read it here.

And as always .. Thanks, Dave!
