TribesCon Rolls On

Submitted by: Imposter @ 12:51 AM | Tuesday, June 20, 2000 | (url: )

Colosus sent in word letting people know that despite hosting problems, TribesCon 2k is still up and running and getting closer. Here's what he had to say:

"First off to answer everyone's question, yes we are still here and yes we will still be having fun on June 30th. We had some trouble with the host of www.tribes2players.com so we have moved to http://www.teamwa.com/tribescon/ which the server is generously hosted by TribalWar. The signup form still works and we are still looking for more people. We have 59 souls that are ready to go, but are looking for 100+

New prizes have been donated and some hardware is being provided to provide a smooth ride for everyone. We also have computer rentals available through Bit-By-Bit. You can contact me for more information about that. I would like to thank everyone for being so patient with us through these tough times. Hope to see you all there.

Tribes Time Demo Script Released

Submitted by: Imposter @ 08:52 PM | Monday, June 19, 2000 | (url: )

Triston has released a script that will allow people to finally compare Frames Per Second in Tribes on a more even basis. Here's what he had to say:

"I wrote a script tonite called TimeDemo.cs. The basical functionality of it is this... watch a demo, it calculates from the start of a map to the end of a map the:
A. Lowest Achieved FPS
B. Highest Achieve FPS
C. Average FPS
D. # of FPS Samples.

It grabs a sample twice per second, or every 0.5 seconds. This script was tested with a .rec file I grabbed from the TW archive. 5150 vs. S3 - StoneHenge. The #3 demo of all time. This is considered the TimeDemo.rec. All future FPS recordings reported by me will be based on that demo. It is a high paced, 20 person game of CTF tribes in an OGL setting, which is what most of us play.
For more information on installation and how it works and how to get it, check out this thread in our forums, and get it from the horse's mouth.

Jail Break

Submitted by: Imposter @ 01:49 PM | Monday, June 19, 2000 | (url: )

Nagorak sent word today of the release of a new game type for Tribes, Jail Break.

"As many of you may or may not know, Jail Break was a popular mod for Quake II, the goal of which was to capture the enemy team and confine them to your jail. I have now created a similar mod for Tribes with a few modifications and additions of my own.

The same premise still exists, capture members of the enemy team by killing them. There's only one catch, you can only capture people using the ELF gun or Blaster. If you kill using anything else, you'll be assigned a murder instead which will make your stay in jail longer if you are captured. Prisoners you capture are also paroled from prison after their jail term has been completed, so you'll have to hunt them down and capture them again. Oh, and be sure to keep your prison generators safe, unless you want all of your inmates to escape (you wouldn't want that). "
For more information, and to download this new game type, head over to: http://members.home.com/nagorak/jailbreak.html.

Good Morning, Dave

Submitted by: Calliope @ 11:44 AM | Monday, June 19, 2000 | (url: )

The following is still more Tribes 2 information from a man who is fast becoming a deity in my book at least, Dave "QIX" Georgeson. He posts the following selections in a thread on our forums in response to forumite questions:

Predefined attack routes are not supported right now. We want some stuff to have to be coordinated through team practices.

manned turrets is one of my personal hot buttons. It may not make it into T2, but look for it as an add-on or in T3 at the least.

cloaking pack is jamming and cloaking all in one. The jamming cloak, by itself, was rarely used by players because it just wasn't worth not having a shield pack or energy pack instead. The cloak pack IS worth it though and will get a lot of useage.

the blaster may be going the way of the dodo. It depends on how well the new weapons work out.

AWACs scout allows commanders to "see" opponents and objects on their sensor net that they normally could NOT see. Therefore, they can issue commands on those targets from the commander screen. It's also very good for hunting down someone hiding out in the boonies outside the normal sensor net. Also, T2 sensor nets will not be as extensive as in T1 maps, although users can set up new sensors to enlarge that net if they so desire. AWACs scouts can give temporary coverage to areas with flyovers until the sensor net has been enlarged.

a target has to be a specific percentage of your screen-size before your sensor net acknowledges it as an enemy. If you stare at someone in zoom, but he's still too small to register, then he doesn't get added.
That's it for this post, but there's three times the amount of info on the thread itself. Interested? Read it here.

And as always .. Thanks, Dave!

Soap Box Updates

Submitted by: Imposter @ 06:23 PM | Sunday, June 18, 2000 | (url: )

After a long hiatus, the Soap Box is back with two new editorials for you to read (and respond to). The first is "So this is what it's come To", an impassioned plea for screenshots other than Mid Airs. The second, "The Community: Arrogance or Stupidity" by DVCxPanda wonders whether people really think before they speak. You can respond to both, and any of the other editorials on the Soap Box, on our forums.

Dave Dave Dave, Dave Dave!

Submitted by: Ratorasniki @ 02:22 PM | Sunday, June 18, 2000 | (url: )

Ok, so its not funny unless you've seen Being John Malkovitch (sp?). Actually its not really funny anyways..but Dave is at it again (as if he ever stopped ) and is giving us some interesting info in the STILL alive and kicking 'Hey!' thread:

Anguish...no...it will 5u><0rz more for you if we don't put you on the beta, so you'll have to watch from outside. *grin*
Zero-X...new fiction is definitely coming for T2, but it will be pertinent to the game. Not reams and reams of non-specific text like we've done in the past.

Bloody...no CG intros. They're a chronic waste of effort and cash. I'd rather spend the money on the game.

Secret Squirrel...spawn camping should be all but impossible this time around. There are literally hundreds of spawn points that are randomly selected each time you respawn.

We should be able to release info on the other new weapons sometime in the next couple of weeks.

YoYo...the broadcasting stuff is still under construction. Suffice it to say that there will be many more options available this time around.

Oberiko...the AWAC scout looks like the regular scout, but has a special device mounted below it.

Oberiko...a script filter is a good idea, but I'm not sure how possible it is since most scripts are client-side. I'll mention it though.

Oberiko...heh...a double/triple barrel chaingun would be extremely potent. Yes, it would be fun, but it might actually be too powerful. We're still playing with gun combos though. We'll see...

TalRasha...only lights can use cloaking packs.

Wookie...the new inventory stations rock. We'll post screens of them when we get the model and effect into the game. (Not done yet.)

Oberiko...Incite magazine has the Tribes 1 cover disk. And Lights are NOT slower in T2 than they are in T1.
----------------
Heh. No worries, Zero. You'll like the new stuff also. I'm pretty sure of that.
----------------
Alpha goes well. Tons and tons of work to do still, but it goes well.
I'll talk to you folks soon. I got up early to scan the forums, but I need to head into the office now. Adios, amigos
For more info, and for the above comments to make sence, check out the thread.

Waypoint Manager Update

Submitted by: figgs @ 11:19 AM | Sunday, June 18, 2000 | (url: )

Crunchy sent this e-mail over about updates to his Waypoint Manager script:

I've updated Waypoint Manager in response to some requests. I've added a new menu which has all the waypoint commands in it, so that you could use just one key for the script. I've added an option to use a proper waypoint clear, the caveat is that it forces a team say. To get around this the script filters out the team say, it also filters out the message "!AP Off" produced by MrPoops AutoPoint. For some reason the filter doesn't work for your client, only for messages from other players, so you will still see youself saying a blank message. This method avoids the flickering compass that has
been annoying ppl.
Check it out at Crunchy's Scripts
