Dev Team Destruction

Submitted by: Rayn @ 11:51 PM | Thursday, June 22, 2000 | (url: )

Last night, the staff of Tribal War and Planet Starsiege faced off against a plethora of Dynamix Dev Team members. We were expecting maybe six Dev Teamers to show, but we got so many that they had to sit some and even lend us a guy. The maps? Raindance and Snowblind. The playing field? Base Plus. It was very apparent that base plus was a whole new world throughout the course of the game. I tried to go Heavy Offense, I really did, it just wasn't happening. The demos are up, we should have quite a collection once we get everyone's in. We got trounced, 8-0/8-1, but if you'd like to watch the carnage, pick up some of the demos.

Tonight the staff or TribalWar and PlanetStarsiege took on the Tribes 2 development team and got our uhm... rears handed to us. Scores were 8-1 on Raindance and 8-0 on Snowblind. We'll have some demos up a bit later of it all, so everyone can make fun of us

Pay for Play .. ASAP

Submitted by: Calliope @ 12:07 PM | Thursday, June 22, 2000 | (url: )

z2.old_skul, UVaLAN 2 admin, posted in our forums regarding an attendance cap on the much-anticipated LAN party. Here's the deal:

There are right now 177 people signed up, 94 of whom have paid via either PayPal or sending Cheater a check. Unfortunately, there are only 160 available connections and just about as many spaces at the Doubletree hotel reserved for the group. I'm going to quote z2.old_skul on this next part so I don't mess it up:

Basically, I'm going to let people confirm their registration by paying. If you're already registered using PayPal, just process that, and you're set. If you're sending Cheater a check, get it in the mail now, because if he gets it after we hit 160 paid attendees, he'll just send it back to you. Registration is on a "first paid, gets in" basis.
Hurry up and pay, folks, or you'll miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hump Rayn's leg and play Tribes at the same time, and in the flesh! For more information on UVaLAN 2, visit Cheater's Wayside.

Tribes 2 Released ..

Submitted by: Calliope @ 11:13 AM | Thursday, June 22, 2000 | (url: )

...sometime in the late fall, as Dave and the rest of Dynamix have told us ad nauseum. Hey, if the Dev Team doesn't know the official release date, how can Amazon.com? Anyway, here are the release dates projected by the three places I've seen taking Tribes 2 preorders:

CDWorld.com: September 29
Amazon.com: September 30
EBWorld.com: October 17

Guess all we can do is hold our breath, and grovel to Dave a little bit more.

Tribes 2 at Sharky's

Submitted by: Imposter @ 11:21 PM | Wednesday, June 21, 2000 | (url: )

Machine Gun Joe pointed out that Sharky Extreme has posted a very nice interview with Dave Georgeson, (who needs no introduction, right?), which you need to check out. Obligitory snippet:

SharkyExtreme: In terms of the outdoors environments and terrain, Tribes 2 looks like it has a huge quality and jump on the competition. What features of the terrain engine allows you to have such gorgeous and realistic looking outdoor elements?

Dave Georgeson: That's a hard question to answer because it requires me to judge my competitors. Suffice it to say that I think we're managing to get some stuff right this time around because we have a veteran staff that knows what they want to achieve in this game. Heck...they're dedicated enough to this game that we're already starting to talk about ways to make Tribes 3 even more kickass. And we will. But weather, surface qualities, foliage, lighting, fog, etc., all go hand-in-hand to make our game very immersive and tactically diverse. The differences between a stark desert mission, and a mission that has the earmarks of a journey through the Louisiana Bayou are phenomenal even from just a gameplay difference.

An Alliance Reforms

Submitted by: Bacchus @ 09:46 PM | Wednesday, June 21, 2000 | (url: )

You know you're a Tribes junkie if....when you read a map and see the cities of Boston, MA and Kent, WA -- the first thing you think of is the former OGL-dominating clan Western Alliance. Inside sources have learned that Western Alliance is setting-up shop once again. Can we expect to see them jump back on OGL soon? Or are they merely preparing early for Tribes2? Check in with The Insider for the scoop.

GNN Previews T2

Submitted by: Calliope @ 12:35 PM | Wednesday, June 21, 2000 | (url: )

The Gaming News Network has include Tribes 2 in its most recent batch of game previews. Here's the obligitory clipping:

Now more than a year after the release of the original Tribes the servers are still pumping and the community is as alive as ever. Now Dynamix is trying to make Tribes 2 a breakthrough game for the FPS genre. It will be the first FPS to incorporate clans into the game. Instead of having a website, which will still be possible, for the only way to join a tribe or inform all the tribesmen of a new member Tribes 2 has an answer for it. You just go into a chat room and ask anyone if they want to join your clan. If you want to try them out you can do that. Then if they pass you can just hit escape and click on their name. Then you click “invite him to join my tribe”. That message will be sent via e-mail. So then if the person says yes to join he is in. It will be a lot simpler.
Want the whole thing? Click here.

Oh, and BTW, the preview also includes a link inviting one to Buy Tribes 2...

Dave Returns!

Submitted by: Calliope @ 12:18 PM | Wednesday, June 21, 2000 | (url: )

Dave Georgeson, our Dynamix-deity, has returned to his Hey! forum thread with many more answers to our Tribes 2 questions. These are selections, chosen to give a sweeping overview of the indepth responses provided by Dave:

We hate making certain things totally automated. Being able to hide with a flag is a good thing. We're adding things to make it harder to hide though...but those things require human involvement (a good thing) instead of automatic detection by waypoint (a bad thing).

"Positive" chats are being implemented. As well as some decidedly "negative" ones.

Yes, the GUI is getting MAJORLY overhauled (especially the command map). Commands to repair turrets take anywhere from 2-3 mouse clicks. That's it. Bots respond quickly to commands, but will occasionally ignore them if they have higher priority objectives. They will however TELL you when they're ignoring you. Ground vehicles now all have wheels. We liked them better that way. You don't swap vehicle barrels...you buy them with different barrels initially (at the vehicle station). No...the APC can't carry ground vehicles. We'll leave that for Halo. No...weight doesn't affect speed. No info on the beta test list method yet. Ladders will be straightforward and MAY be built in (even though I previously said they would not be).

the minimap is a balancing act between gameplay and framerate. Believe it or not, minimaps (good ones) really suck up the framerate. Plus, there is something to be said for the slight awkwardness of having to flip to the command map for an overview of the situation. I know it would be more efficient to get an overview at all times, but it really changes the gameplay. In my opinion, it's actually better gameplay to have a bit of situational un-awareness unless you switch to the sensor net view in the command map. I know many of you will disagree, but we've talked about this several times in-house and we intend to leave it the way it is. For now anyway...
That's it for the front page, but trust me, you don't want to forget about the rest of this info. To check it all out, visit the forum thread here.

I'm looking for a new way to say .. Thanks Dave!!!

T2 Preview and Screenshots

Submitted by: Calliope @ 12:07 PM | Wednesday, June 21, 2000 | (url: )

Fragzone has posted a short preview of the much anticipated Tribes 2, and has included in their posting what seem to be three all new bioderm screenshots. Here's the snippit .. check it out for yourself. Oh, and keep in mind that these guys use English as a second language, so be gentle on the writing :

Dynamix is currently busy developing Tribes 2, the sequel that will be distributed by Sierra. In Tribes 2 you will find an improved graphics engine with better models, fog, lightning and larger levels. The long awaited rocket launcher will be included, but will function as a slow firing Anti-air weapon .. Tribes 2 looks like a sure winner, and games like Halo and Team Fortress 2 will have a hard time climbing on top of it.
To read the rest of the article and check out the very cool screenshots, click here.

Thanks, Machine Gun Joe!
