Greece Capitulates to Deutschland as its starving population beg for more welfare mon

Greece reached a desperately-needed bailout deal with the eurozone on Monday after marathon overnight talks, in a historic agreement to prevent the country crashing out of the European single currency.

Leftist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras agreed to tough reforms after 17 hours of gruelling negotiations in return for a three-year bailout worth up to 86 billion euros ($96 billion), Greece's third rescue programme in five years.

"EuroSummit has unanimously reached agreement," EU President Donald Tusk said. "All ready to go for ESM (eurozone bailout fund the European Stability Mechanism) programme for Greece with serious reforms and financial support."

The new rescue for Athens is the country's third since 2010 and came after a bitter six-month struggle following Tsipras's election in January that put Greece's membership of the eurozone in the balance.

Greek banks have been closed for nearly two weeks and there were fears they were about to run dry due to a lack of extra funding by the European Central Bank, meaning Athens would have had to print its own currency and effectively leave the single currency.

"Grexit has gone," European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told AFP, ruling out the threat of Greece leaving the single currency, which could potentially destablise not only the euro but the world economy.

Tsipras insisted the deal was good for Greece despite the fact that the harsh terms were near identical to those rejected by Greeks in a referendum just one week ago.

"We fought a righteous battle to the end," a smiling Tsipras said as he left the talks, adding that despite the deal's harshness the "great majority of Greek people will support this effort."

Asian markets rose on news of the debt deal, after a torrid few weeks while traders waited for an accord.

Wallingford police called after Nazi, Confederate merchandise found at flea market...

Submitted by: ZooL @ 07:58 PM | Sunday, July 12, 2015 | (url:

WALLINGFORD, Conn. (WTNH) Over the weekend, Wallingford police were dispatched after someone called them to say there was a merchant selling Nazi and Confederate memorabilia at flea market, which some had found deeply offensive. The police chief says no one was arrested because no laws were broken; the items were being sold on private property.

Its not clear if the items that were being sold were authentic, but theyre easy to find in Connecticut. Military Specialties, Inc. in Newington sells a variety of historical military objects, including those produced by the Third Reich and Confederate reproductions.

Its here and youre likely to see it, said co-owner William Moore. If you want, well talk to you about it and give you the history about it.

Moore says he supports the caller who dialed up police and is sympathetic to what they felt. As a dealer of commodities with a controversial past, he can see both sides.

This is America, you can buy and sell whatever you care to, said Moore.

Police say the mayors office is looking into a complaint made over the incident.

New York (CNN)
Down goes Chestnut. Long live the "Megatoad."

For the first time in nearly a decade, the world's hot dog king is someone not named Joey Chestnut.

Matthew "Megatoad" Stonie devoured 62 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes at Nathan's International Hot Dog Eating Contest in New York on Saturday, beating longtime champion Chestnut's tally of 60 and winning his first Mustard yellow belt.

At 5-foot-8 and 130 pounds, Stonie beat his own record of 56 from last year's contest. A smiling Stonie told the crowd it was surreal to win on the sport's biggest stage.

as a species, we will not be able to raise $15 billion a year, globally, to help curb fossil fuel use. Pollution in general, whether it is causing climate change (it is) or not, should be destroyed.
you're a fucking moron if you believe otherwise. Hey I want acid rain! I want cancers, asthmas, lung disease from easily prevented bullshit!

9 mile oil slick off Santa Barbara

Submitted by: Goshin @ 03:39 PM | Thursday, May 21, 2015 | (url:

LOL! Oil pipes!

Clean-up crews are working around the clock as investigators look into how tens of thousands of gallons of oil spewed into the sea off Santa Barbara.

More than 6,000 gallons (22,700 litres) of oil have been mopped from the beach - a fraction of the 20,000 gallons officials say spilled into the sea after a pipe burst on Tuesday.

Federal officials are to excavate the pipe to find clues to how it ruptured.

The company responsible for the pipeline has publicly apologised

The alarm was first raised on Tuesday when authorities received reports of a foul smell near Refugio State Beach around midday (04:00 GMT).

Emergency responders found a half-mile slick in the ocean and traced the origin to a ruptured onshore pipeline spewing oil into a rainwater drain which ran to the ocean.

The pipeline was shut off about three hours later.

Americans wages are fucked for no reason

Submitted by: Goshin @ 09:46 PM | Thursday, May 7, 2015 | (url: http://mobile.nyt...)

"In interviews, Danish employees of McDonalds, Burger King and Starbucks said that even though Denmark had one of the worlds highest costs of living about 30 percent higher than in the United States their $20 wage made life affordable.
True, a Big Mac here costs more $5.60, compared with $4.80 in the United States. But that is a price Danes are willing to pay. We Danes accept that a burger is expensive, but we also know that working conditions and wages are decent when we eat that burger, said Soren Kaj Andersen, a University of Copenhagen professor who specializes in labor issues.
Measured in Big Macs, McDonalds workers in Denmark earn the equivalent of 3.4 Big Macs an hour, while their American counterparts earn 1.8, according to a study by Orley C. Ashenfelter, a Princeton economics professor, and Stepan Jurajda, an economics professor at Charles University in Prague.
And the Danish restaurants are less profitable. With fast-food wages in the United States so much lower than in Denmark, and the price of Big Macs in the two countries similar, Mr. Ashenfelter said, It must be that U.S. McDonalds are far more profitable. The higher wages and the higher menu prices help explain why there are 16 McDonalds per million inhabitants in Denmark, but 45 McDonalds per million in the United States, Mr. Jurajda said."

Evaluating NASA's EM Drive

Submitted by: Goshin @ 08:16 PM | Wednesday, April 29, 2015 | (url: http://www.nasasp...)

A group at NASAs Johnson Space Center has successfully tested an electromagnetic (EM) propulsion drive in a vacuum a major breakthrough for a multi-year international effort comprising several competing research teams. Thrust measurements of the EM Drive defy classical physics expectations that such a closed (microwave) cavity should be unusable for space propulsion because of the law of conservation of momentum.

so here's a pretty decent nerd article about the shit going on at NASA
i'll start digging around some more and put more info up as I find it

the fact that it's got it's own article on this site is pretty significant though

Hell has arrived, in China!

Hidden in an unknown corner of Inner Mongolia is a toxic, nightmarish lake created by our thirst for smartphones, consumer gadgets and green tech, discovers Tim Maughan.

From where I'm standing, the city-sized Baogang Steel and Rare Earth complex dominates the horizon, its endless cooling towers and chimneys reaching up into grey, washed-out sky. Between it and me, stretching into the distance, lies an artificial lake filled with a black, barely-liquid, toxic sludge.

Id seen some photos before I left for Inner Mongolia, but nothing prepared me for the sight The alien environment at Baotou lake
Dozens of pipes line the shore, churning out a torrent of thick, black, chemical waste from the refineries that surround the lake. The smell of sulphur and the roar of the pipes invades my senses. It feels like hell on Earth.

You may not have heard of Baotou, but the mines and factories here help to keep our modern lives ticking. It is one of the worlds biggest suppliers of rare earth minerals. These elements can be found in everything from magnets in wind turbines and electric car motors, to the electronic guts of smartphones and flatscreen TVs. In 2009 China produced 95% of the world's supply of these elements, and it's estimated that the Bayan Obo mines just north of Baotou contain 70% of the world's reserves. But, as we would discover, at what cost?

Worlds first successful cock transplant

Submitted by: Odio @ 03:36 PM | Friday, March 13, 2015 | (url:

In a ground-breaking operation, a team of pioneering surgeons from Stellenbosch University (SU) and Tygerberg Hospital performed the first successful penile transplant in the world.

The marathon nine-hour operation, led by Prof Andr van der Merwe, head of SU's Division of Urology, was performed on 11 December 2014 at Tygerberg Hospital in Bellville, Cape Town. This is the second time that this type of procedure was attempted, but the first time in history that a successful long-term result was achieved.

"South Africa remains at the forefront of medical progress," says Prof Jimmy Volmink, Dean of SU's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS). "This procedure is another excellent example of how medical research, technical know-how and patient-centred care can be combined in the quest to relieve human suffering. It shows what can be achieved through effective partnerships between academic institutions and government health services."

Van der Merwe was assisted by Prof Frank Graewe, head of the Division of Plastic Reconstructive Surgery at SU FMHS, Prof Rafique Moosa, head of the FMHS Department of Medicine, transplant coordinators, anaesthetists, theatre nurses, a psychologist, an ethicist and other support staff.

The patient, whose identity is being protected for ethical reasons, has made a full recovery and has regained all function in the newly transplanted organ.

"Our goal was that he would be fully functional at two years and we are very surprised by his rapid recovery," says Van der Merwe. The end result of the transplant was the restoration of all the patient's urinary and reproductive functions.

"It's a massive breakthrough. We've proved that it can be done we can give someone an organ that is just as good as the one that he had," says Graewe. "It was a privilege to be part of this first successful penis transplant in the world."

Top Gear Host Jeremy Clarkson Suspended for 'hitting producer'

Submitted by: narmF @ 06:45 PM | Wednesday, March 11, 2015 | (url:

London (CNN)Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson was suspended for allegedly hitting a producer, the BBC reported on Wednesday.

The BBC said Clarkson, one of the corporation's highest earners, had "a fracas with a BBC producer" in a statement released yesterday.

"Jeremy Clarkson has been suspended pending an investigation," they said. "No one else has been suspended. Top Gear will not be broadcast this Sunday." The BBC reported that the next two episodes, and possibly the third and final show of the series, will not be aired.

Fans of the presenter expressed dismay at the decision. At the time of writing, more than 300,000 people have signed a petition seeking his reinstatement.

Using the hashtag #BringBackClarkson, which is trending worldwide, some Twitter users lamented that the show would not be the same without him.
