yeah they should really have a few "caravan" lines that you can take. maybe it costs 100 caps and drains your fatigue or whatever. but anyway mods will certainly take care of that. I'm surprised its taking so long for the official mod tools to come out

wagon caravans which can randomly be raided... Boner central, but Bethesda is extremely lazy with their IP's and utilizing lore which is a reason people are hoping Obsidian is pulled back in to do a "vegas" version of Fallout 4.
 
I was playing f4 without fast travel and it's not too bad though admittedly I didn't get super far. You definitely have to decide if loot is worth keeping or not though.
