I never think of death metal when I see/hear "metal". I probably should start, because I keep getting disappointed.

metal kind of sucks these days. Loud guitar mashing, lead singer screaming, etc.
and yeah I like punk

I fully admit that I don't know a lot about metal.
I did see Mastadon this summer (are they considered metal?) and they kicked ass.
I also saw Clutch whom some people call metal but I have no idea how to describe them except that they rocked.

Clutch is awesome. I don't care for Mastadon. Listen to High on Fire if you like Mastadon. Listen to The Company Band if you like Clutch (Neil Fallon is the lead singer of both). There are plenty of bands that have punk influences - especially thrash bands. Theres been a resurgence (was? still is?) of newer thrash bands playing old-school thrash like the bay area 1980s. Try out Gama Bomb or Municipal Waste. Some people might hate it but whatever.

I'm into stuff like Soilwork, Arch Enemy, In Flames (not so much now, though), Alter Bridge, and Pantera when it comes to metal, which I know is kind of across the board. I just can't find many bands like Soilwork that I like--most sound like garage bands, to me.

I mean it sounds like you are listening to a lot of the original gothenburg-style melodic death metal. Try Gardenian, Dark Tranquility and At the Gates. I hate metalcore and always thought Soilwork sounded too much like it, but you might like Chimaira or Trivium. In any event, Metal Archives is your friend.

I really liked Archspire, thanks for the suggestion.
I've been on an american death metal kick lately, so lots of stuff from Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Decapitated, Deicide, Cattle Decapitation, Suffocation, Skinless, Necrophagist, Nile, etc.
I am always looking for something heavier and more brutal to fuel my next set in the gym though.

This is excellent. Its got a bit of a 1349/behemoth feel to it, which is a black metal sound I really like.
I'm also one of those dorks that really likes the corny black metal bands like Immortal, Dimmu Borgir, and Dark Funeral

i never understood the people that enjoy listening to metal.
i've tried to listen to it, but it's just nothing but screaming and simple, loud, distorted guitar blaring.
eh, to each their own.
