From July:

Can Warner Bros. Make a Silmarillion Movie? | Screen Rant

The lawsuit was finally settled “amicably” earlier this month, so does that mean that we can expect to see more adventures in Middle-earth on the big screen any time soon? Unfortunately, the chances are very slim for a multitude of reasons – though it’s certainly not impossible.

Impossible to do it justice.

Although people said the same thing about LOTR and Peter did the impossible

Was expecting you as first reply <3

And yeah.. If not a movie, it would be a heck of a replacement for GoT

While Sir Ian is still alive ...

I don't think people would get it. They'd be wondering where Frodo/Bilbo are.

Too much material over too long a time period. I guess it could work if the focus was just on the war. The book has a lot implied with the story telling. It's more about the birth of a world than any one character which is visually amazing but might be confusing for a movie as audience. I could see a TV series like HBO Rome working as a model for the multiple characters and time jumps.

^^^

They turned a children's adventure novel into a 3+ movie ****fest

What are they going to do with a book that has dozens of complex stories spanning the history of middle earth

If peter Jackson could go back in time he'd probably make fellowship into 3 movies, two towers into 3 movies and rotk into 3 movies

Search your feelings you know it to be true

if they did a movie primarily focusing on Beren and Luthien I could be down with that. Especially as it ties in with Aragorn's parentage so it would be slightly relevant for fans of the first movies

otherwise I think there is just too much in those books and most of it wouldn't be suited to a movie

the silmarillion would be hard as a whole but some of the stories in it could work like The Children of Hurin, or the death of the two trees or the battle against Morgoth in his castle. or i guess the fall of numenor

The article gracefully skips over the fact that the Tolkien Estate, and not The Saul Zaentz Company, still holds the rights to everything that is not The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

They would be better going with a TV series if anything was to be done in the future.

In interviews after the Hobbit it was pretty apparent that with the various lawsuits + Del Toro backing out Peter Jackson didn't have enough time to do the prep that he had compared to LotR. Rings had years of development where the Hobbit didn't even have a full year of Jackson at the helm if I remember right.
