Special elections are a strong indicater. You can tell a lot from a 15% turnout in April for a seat that's up again in 6 months.

The average r->d swing has been 17 points.

If this result holds this would be a 19 point swing.

Republicans won the election (good job!) but only because they had a 30 point head start. If this election was in a purple district/state it'd be a D blowout based on those margins.

No one wins national or state elections based on solid red/blue states. You never see Vermont or Alabama swing an election, or congress, or the senate. It's states like Florida, Virginia, Ohio..

So seeing a 19 point swing is big.

Republicans had the same swing in their direction prior to Trump. They picked up seats and state races like crazy. That's done now.

No, seeing a 19 point swing in the same turnout would be big. Seeing it when turnout is down 50% from 2016 is meaningless. Nobody cares about who their congressmen is for 6 months enough to take off work. It's purely motivated by optics.
 
No to worry, if dems can keep 2020 turnout to 20% they could realistically see a 20 point swing. It's the 20202020 strategy.
