Digg: Newegg ships 5 fake CPUs
Another few people with the same problem: first build ever - i7 920 - Overclockers Forums
slashdot: http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/1...Intel-Core-i7s

We had an order of Corei7 920s come in recently. 5 of the CPUs we received wound up being fake.

The box was fake. Instead of had "security sealed" tape, it had "security sealed" printed on the box with clear tape on it. The sparkly silver Intel sticker was a generic sparkly silver sticker with the words Intel pressed into it.

Upon opening up the box, I realized the plastic inside was fake as it was much more lightweight and flimsy than usual.

The manual was a stack of blank pages stapled together.

The heatsink was a block of heatsink shaped epoxy with a sticker on top that made it look like a fan.

The CPU was a layer of solder on a single layer PCB with a fake heatspreader on top. There was a grey sticker with the normal Corei7 writing on it.

It was pretty cool looking until I realized this means *****ing at newegg for a replacement and scrounging around for 5 additional CPUs to account for the shortage.

I wonder how this all came to be...

I thought they ordered directly from Intel.

Employee theft at Newegg or maybe even at Intel?

Guess this is possible. I would assume returned CPU's are tested so this would be found. I guess the testers could get lazy and toss **** back on the shelves.

At any rate that is a huge ****up on Neweggs part and they need to kiss your ass and conduct a investigation into the cause and rectify it.

The common suspicion so far is that somebody working at a shipping company is pulling the old switcheroo while they have control of the packages.

I don't think it would be due to a bunk return because way too much effort was put into making a fake core i7 box and parts to do a one-time switch.

Did you contact Newegg yet? If yes, then what did they say?

I know Newegg and they can sometime be dicks about stuff like this - such as the missing heatsink in my friends AMD Cpu he recently bought. They finally bent and gave it - returned and shipped a new one.

I can remember the dark old days where the chinese used to take lower spec processors and overrate them, things like selling Celeron 300s as 333 and 350s and ****.

They are just getting lazy now and throwing something together that weighs about right.

It's not going to be my job to contact them. I discovered the cpus, but it'll be up to the purchasing department to contact newegg and get things resolved.
