There's nothing wrong with doing it for looks. Bodybuilding competitions would be pretty boring if they were scored on "how healthy they feel".

That being said, I do not condone doing things that are radically unhealthy just so you can look good.

This is true. Nothing is wrong with doing it for looks but it's the "only" part that i think is not right.

Wow some of you guys really bulked up. I'm 6'1 - 158 lbs, and just cannot, for the life of me, put on any weight. What's the best way to put on muscle mass whilst keeping it cut? I don't want to go the dirty bulk/cut routine. I started working out again (and I lift whenever I stop being sore from the last workout), and I run about a mile every 4 days (don't want to run too much because I'm already at like 10% body fat). I've been trying to eat a lot of protein, but second opinions always help

Running too much won't make you lose that much body fat. Run at least 4 miles to get in good shape .
To get cut just do pushups,etc..most people laugh at my suggestions though However you won't put on much muscle mass. Why not balancing? One day do weights, the other day go simple.
One possiblity is that you don't do enough?Lifting weights once a week is good but it ll take you forever to get cut/bulky/whatever.

Actually, to get cut you just have to eat right and workout (whether it's push-ups, weights, running, mowing the lawn, walking, etc)

Then how does bulking work?
Bulking is eat as much as you want and do exercise...
and cutting is eat a certain amount of proteins/carbs/etc and do exercise?
That's it?

Jesus christ...

To bulk, eat more calories than you can burn in a day
To maintain, eat the same amount of calories as you burn in a day
To cut, eat less calories than you burn in a day

To add muscle mass quickly, lift weights
To build strength/endurance, lift weights or do calisthenics

That's how simple it is

Bulking is simply gaining weight. If you're trying for a clean bulk, then you have to make sure you eat the right foods so that when you gain weight, it's mostly muscle and not lots of fat. If you're just going for as much weight as possible, then eat anything within reach. I think dirty bulking is dumb -- it's just not efficient.

To cut, all you're doing is losing weight. There is no such thing as "toning" muscles to make them pop out from under your fat. You just have to lose the fat by making sure you burn more calories in a day than you consume. If you have an active lifestyle, you may not even need to work out -- but it sure makes it quicker.
