This isn't exactly "news", but I thought it was worth making a news post. ajaxprotection, a Garag e Games employee, made a very interesting post in the forums here:

Hmm...might be a good idea to keep your eyes open around the GarageGames booth at GDC 2006. Never know what kinda things might be shown off...

Now, what makes this interesting is the title of the post (and the discussion), which was "Any chance we will ever see another Tribes game". My guess? Garag e Games are working on a "spiritual successor" to Tribes, much like the way Irrational Games are working on a "spiritual successor" to System Shock called BioShock. Pure speculation at this point, but if you happen to be attending the Game Developer Conference in San Jose (March 20th - 24th) this year, be sure to stop by their booth to see what they have.

You can see the post in the forums here

If that is in fact what they are working on, it’s pretty exciting.

that would be crazy.. i find it hard to believe they'd spend as much time as is required to develop a decent FPS over working on the quick arcade games they've been doing since GG's conception.

not saying i wouldn't want them to, i just find it highly unlikely.

While I'd love to see another Tribes game, I won't hold my breath.

Looks like atlas on the TSE to me. Might be nice. Might just be hype. But they do proably want a upper tier game to show off their new engine.

i have no idea about the technical stuff.. the last game i played on torque was t2, so that looks like a pretty big improvement to me.

Sadly... even if this is what we hope it is... it isn't going to be Shangri-la. The mythos of the spiritual "sequel" to the one true Starsiege: Tribes is a White Elephant. While it may (and I hope) be a kick ass game, like the original, in a modern sense... this "fairy tale" of the White Knight Developers riding in and rescuing our nostalgic glory days isn't going to happen. Nostalgia just isn't what it used to be anymore. That's why they call it Nostalgia.

Will it be a fun game? Could be. Will it finally end the generations old schisms in our community by uniting us under 1 "Tribes Game" again? No... It still won't be Tribes for some of us.

ANYWAYS! Enough doomsaying! Bring on Tribes 4.
