lebron was great, but that game 7 win was way more about what boston couldn't do than anything special the cavs pulled together (other than maybe jeff green showing up out of nowhere)

All things considered, then, this NBA Finals run has to be considered one of James***8217; crowning achievements. Although James talked up his supporting cast in his postgame comments, I went back and re-ran the numbers from this story, in which we used Basketball-Reference***8217;s Box Plus/Minus to estimate the true talent4 of every player LeBron played with on an NBA Finals run. And that method says that this is easily the worst crop of teammates James has ever dragged to an NBA Finals ***8212; even worse than the one he had while being swept by the San Antonio Spurs as a 22-year-old in 2007:

Quote:
LeBron James found a way on Sunday, just like he always does. By leading Cleveland to an 87-79 win over Boston in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals, LeBron punched his ticket to his eighth consecutive NBA Finals appearance. No player since Bill Russell with the 1960s Celtics had been to four or more Finals in a row. LeBron has now done that for two separate franchises, with vastly different supporting casts. He***8217;s the most versatile player in basketball history, adapting his game to maximize his teammates, regardless of who they are or what they can do. That ability has been on full display throughout this year***8217;s playoffs, as an undermanned Cavaliers team has shapeshifted around LeBron in each series to advance.
sry, lebron better than everyone else in the world, ever

Quote:
Versatility is LeBron***8217;s defining trait, especially in comparison to his fellow all-time greats. He***8217;s not as explosive a scorer as Michael Jordan, and he***8217;s not as good a passer as Magic Johnson. He isn***8217;t as dominant defensively as Bill Russell, and he***8217;s not as unguardable in the post as Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. What***8217;s so incredible about LeBron is that he***8217;s almost as good as all of those players in each of their strongest categories. None of the others could have succeeded on as many different types of teams as LeBron. James doesn***8217;t have a position: He can play all five at a high level on both sides of the ball. Almost any combination of players can work around him. The past eight years are proof of that.

While LeBron***8217;s 3-5 record in the Finals is often held up as a knock against him, his carrying those teams to the Finals represents a more impressive accomplishment. Cleveland will be a massive underdog against either Golden State or Houston in this year***8217;s Finals, but that doesn***8217;t make his work dragging the Cavs through the first three rounds of the playoffs any less impressive. What LeBron has done in 2018 goes right up there with what he did in 2007, when he led a team whose second-best player was Larry Hughes to the Finals. The same line of thinking applies to 2015, when he brought a team that started Matthew Dellavedova and Timofey Mozgov to Game 6 of the Finals.

LeBron may not end up reaching Jordan***8217;s mark of six NBA titles, but his eight consecutive Finals appearances will be just as difficult a mark for any future player to match. The sheer willpower and endurance necessary to make that happen in the modern NBA is mind-boggling. Only four teams have made four straight Finals in the past 50 years: the Showtime Lakers, Bird***8217;s Celtics, LeBron***8217;s Heat, and LeBron***8217;s Cavaliers. (The Warriors will join that group if they beat the Rockets on Monday.) LeBron has played in 164 playoff games over the past eight seasons, the equivalent of two entire regular seasons (with two extra games thrown in for good measure). Most players would break down physically under that strain. LeBron has never suffered a serious injury.

LeBron shouldn***8217;t be this good after 15 seasons in the league. He***8217;s already played more career minutes than Jordan, even counting MJ***8217;s two seasons with the Wizards. LeBron has dedicated his life to basketball, and he***8217;s helped it reach new heights of global popularity. He***8217;s not just the face of a franchise. He***8217;s the face of an entire sport. That goes hand in hand his being in the Finals every year, no matter who he***8217;s playing with.

LeBron can***8217;t always win in the Finals once he gets there, but he doesn***8217;t leave any points (or rebounds, or assists ***8230;) on the board. He uses his versatility to get the most out of his supporting cast, and Lue will shuffle pieces around him until something clicks. A team with LeBron James always has a chance.

The Pistons plan to interview Kenny Smith for the Detroit head coaching position, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports.

The Jet has been a key piece on TNT for their NBA coverage, and he's more about the Xs and Os than the other two analysts on the Inside the NBA panel. Smith did also interview for the Knicks job back in April, but it didn't sound like he was close to getting that position. The Pistons sound like they want to get this figured out before the NBA Draft.

Andre Iguodala (leg) is listed as out for Game 1 against the Cavs on Thursday.

According to the team, he is making progress, but "the pain that accompanies the bone bruise persists, as done the inflammation of he nerve surrounding the left knee." That's not exactly an encouraging description of his injury, and he had trouble with forward and lateral movement over the weekend. Iguodala will be re-evaluated again before Game 2, but he could certainly be out for that one. With no Hamptons Five lineup, Kevon Looney likely starts with more Shaun Livingston, Nick Young and Jordan Bell.

Kevin Love (head) has completed the NBA***8217;s Concussion Return to Play Program and will be available to play Thursday in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

That is big news after his injury on May 25 when he collided with Jayson Tatum. Coach Ty Lue said that Love is going to be in the starting lineup, which raises some questions on who starts next to him. Tristan Thompson had the worst net rating against the Warriors among current Cavs players this season, so maybe the team goes back to a small-ball lineup. Jeff Green should still see minutes regardless.
