I bought a house with a pool last september, and its getting near time to open it for the season. Previous owner ran both the pool and the hot tub on Bromine. I dont particularily care for the smell, nor do I want to buy a new pail of Bromine pucks. I went and looked at converting to a salt water system, and the guy at the store asked me if I had considered using Ozone instead. Outwardly it appears as the better way to go, cheaper to install and less danger of increasing the rate of corrosion. I am also debating buying a ozonator for the hot tub as well. Anyone have any experience with running a Ozone system on a swimming pool? Its a medium sized pool, but I read an article that says the ozone doesnt persist long enough to be effectual on its own as an antimicrobial agent.

If you tie a heavy object to your ankles and then jump in the pool, then your body will sink.

the cool thing about the salt water system is the computer does all the work... you put some salt in and it will PH itself and keep it balanced. I never installed one of these Ozone things but from what i understand is they still take quite a bit of maintenance and you still need to add chemicals. I like the salt water systems but they have drawbacks as well i guess. check out this ....

ozone is awesome. Our generator sprung a leak and melted the lungs of one of our maintenance guys. go go 30% lung capacity.

This was at a community pool and it saved a metric assload of money each year. It was used with chlorine though. Didn't know they were selling these systems for private pools.

Let me clarify some things for you.

Any product that says "maintenance free" is hogwash. These are sell tactics.
Salt systems WILL NOT "PH themselves"

I like salt systems but they require your attention on a weekly basis. You need to soak the cell in an acid/water mixture to remove calcium buildup. If you don't do this regularly you'll damage the cell and they ain't cheap to replace. Not only that but you won't produce chlorine either.

Ozonators help, but they are not a stand alone solution.

The simplest and most newb friendly way to keep a pool up is to simply add chlorine tablets and muriatic acid on a regular basis. Get yourself a test kit (liquid drops are more accurate than strips) and test weekly your chlorine and ph level and add chlorine/acid as needed.

You won't want to add chlorine until the bromine has dissipated. Mixing the 2 is not recommended.

My personal opinion is you should switch from bromine to chlorine and maintain it that way for a summer until you get the hang of the chemistry. Then if you're still interested in Salt systems, go for it.
