except that if another one is sliding down the blade towards the light hilt, it's just going to slice right through the non-laser part because it sticks out. the really important part within an inch of the blade is still made of space plastic or whatever.

It was basically about the same as the original trilogy if the original trilogy was without a cool bad guy or han solo, had a lot more ewoks, everything was shot in front of a green screen, and luke skywalker's dialogue and acting was double angsty on top of already being bad

The most reasonable explanation I've seen so far is that it's an ancient unstable saber. From the sounds, the blade, and the way it looks it very well could be. And with such an old saber it would be flawed, and those two jutting out might just be exhaust for the saber itself.
Some sabers have crystal chambers, this one has exhaust ports.

except the corners of the crossguard are part of the light sabers beam emitter. that part can be cut off
