Once you're outside the Van Allen belts you're in open country, there's no more outside force shielding you from radiation and you need to provide for your own protection.
Didn't know about the SAA. The effects of it are cool.

If you've ever tuned in to ISS Mission Coverage on NASA TV you can see the SAA marked out on their map.

From 150 to ~450 shows all but a few of the manned space flights so far.

Spoiler

Made these as part of a series last year: Atmosphere > Earth Orbit > Earth Moon > Near Solar System > Far Solar System. Basically with each step all the data of the previous is squeezed into a tight little ball and things become more and more sparse.

btw the markers are the apogee of each mission

was almost a scrub

Quote:
The count was nominal with only a power imbalance on a distributor (LH2 power buss) evaluated by controllers since tanking. Ground Support Equipment (GSE) related to the buss had shorted out twice before failing. Controllers discussed affected systems, prior to clearing the issue for flight.

However, late in the countdown, the range suffered an issue, resulting in a RED. Launch Director Mike Leinbach and his team decided to take the countdown through to T-5 minutes, before holding. With only seconds remaining in the five minute launch window, the range reported a GO.

Teams in the Firing Room then quickly returned Discovery into the countdown, prior to successfully launching her on what appears to be a nominal return to space.

It can also be seen on the ET cam video that a foam liberation hit Discovery after four minutes of ascent. The liberation appears to be small by way of mass, and liberated long after the time of aerodynamic concern ***8211; as can be seen by its low velocity impact and no sign of damage on the area it struck.
wow

yes, i would like to hear an explanation on that one.

I would like to commend you on making one of the few actual informative threads on TW. Nobody else seems to take an interest in spaceflight

I was at the cape and saw it launch from a boat..

what sucked was that i flew in late got stuck with a $100 rental just because of stupid 100 foot level fog in Fort Lauderdale Executive so I had to land in Melbourne.. Even though I spent $600.00 worth today in flying and a car rental , it was well worth the expedition that will stay with me for my rest of my life.

Sad to say there is only 2 more launches occurring.
I honestly think that the only good thing the US had and was number 1 was the space program , now we go to the back of the bus with Russia and China leading the way :|

Anyone going up for the last 2?

I walked outside and watchededed it go up.

At one time these were so routine and taken for granted that nobody around here batted an eye for a launch and ignored the sonic booms for a landing. Now we sort of miss 'em.
