What is the best external hard drive, good size, and a middle of the road price?

WD MyBook 1TB for like 99 bucks.

I bought my own separate HD and external enclosure, and it's been working fine for a couple of years now

I have one.... Gets the job done but it can be painfully slow transferring big files.

Are you wanting a portable drive or a external desktop drive?

I have one, it's pretty decent
It's noisier than a Lacie, though.

This is pretty much what he is doing. He wants to be able to rip all the dvds that he has, and be able to get rid of them (or at least store them somewhere).

is this one of the NAS models?
I have trouble streaming from my 4TB WD NAS and the built in media server that they said was awesome sucks donkey balls.
Setting the VLC buffer to 20 seconds cleared it up mostly but for a gigabit connection it is no where near fast enough. Large file transfers go at about 5MB/s which means it should be able to stream just fine but it doesn't

I've had 2 WD external 'my book' or whatever die on me. I just back up on an internal drive and simply unplug the molex from it since I rarely download anything worth keeping.

Buy an internal SATA drive with good specs.
Pop it into an eSATA enclosure.

This is what I do, for sure. But it isn't for me, and the guy wants to be able to just go to a store and pick one up. And I don't want the hassle of building it for him, or having any complaints if something ****s up.
