I'm more interested in why he did it, not how.

I can sit here and list mass killings that didn't involve guns, but that doesn't change the fact people are crazy.

Most at least have a reason or a motive.

I'm more curious how someone brings that many guns and that much ammunition into a major hotel filled with cameras and security and nobody notices.

The hotels are too. I saw something on TV that said casinos/hotels get a lot of people pretending to get hurt, then sue. So they have cameras on every elevator, corridors, and even fire escapes.
 
I wonder if that strip "rent a machine gun" place Battlefield or whatever - is a ghost town or booming today?

There's not a hotel on the strip that you don't have to go through the casino to get to the hotel rooms. The elevators have cameras, the hallways often do too.
