Smartbombs, they seem really cool but does anyone really ever use them?

Don't work that great, unless you get swarmed my a bunch of NPCs at close range. Even then, the refire rate is so slow it's useless without other defenses.

the higher your skill in energy pulse weapons, the lower the refire rate. So you can really get that sucker going.

Plus some of the higher level ones do nasty damage. The small one's do about 15 but a medium sized one (cruiser size) does 100 damage per hit to anything within a 4km range.

For me the only real downside is the fact that it does hit anything, both your enemies and your friends.

Saved my ass from missles before and as mentioned before they do keep the swarms of rats away, have 2 on my destroyer and usually at least one on other combat ships.

Offensively they're a close range AoE.
Defensively they're a missile defense system.

Just like the buckler it takes timing, skill, and luck to use.

It's a tough choice, especially on an amarr ship, leave them on too long and they drain your cap so you need to time their fire.
