It actually depends on the type of monitor, FH. If you still have the monitor problem (that is, if you havent killed yourself yet), you need to let somebody look at it. My monitor is a pseudo flat screen, with a crt curvy screen beneath a second flat layer of glass. I wouldn't be having the sandpaper problem, myself, because this layer seems buffable/removable without too much problem.
Point is, your situation might be salvageable, but get a specialist before you decide the problem lies in the power cord having too much insulation.
And normally I wouldnt point this out, but since you suck at the obvious, dont PM that guy about the speakers.
