Best freeware programs?

ok if anyone gets (i think it's PCWORLD) magazine, there was an article in this last month's issue... it was their favorite software of 2002, and one of them was a program that let you surf newsgroups and download things, alot easier than doing it manually... i forget what it was called, if anyone could enlighten me i would greatly appreciate it.

you don't think i've tried? besides, i'm not positive it's from pcworld.

was just asking if anyone remembered or had it laying around and could let me know...

thanks for being a jackass.

Xteq Like to TweakUI, but with hundreds more options.

DefilerPak All-in-one codec pack. Everything you need, nothing you don't. Better than Nemo IMO.
* ffdshow: ffdshow will play back DivX 3.11a, DivX 4, DivX 5, and XviD movies.
It also includes powerful post-processing filters.
* Intervideo MPEG-2 Video Decoder.
* Nic's XviD DirectShow filter, for additional compatibility.
* Elecard's Moonlight Odio Dekoda, for MP3 and MP2.
* Ogg DirectShow filters: Enables support for .OGM containers and Ogg Vorbis
audio streams.
* DirectVobSub, which supports a wide variety of subtitle formats.

Someone post a link to that Site that has a serials pack...basically afaik a text file with cdkeys,serials,etc for hundreds of apps.

Peter's Ultimate Alarm Clock

Exactly as described.... I've tried a bunch of other ones, none compare.

Set an unlimited number of alarms, with extreme versatility.

You can set up a to prompt message, read a message (MS SAPI), play a .wav file, and execute any file (playlists work great).

Sleep button too I think (I would never wake up with one, so I don't use it).

Very flexible in scheduling too.... you only want it to go off on the 4th to last day of the month, it does it.

Definitely worth downloading if you've ever wanted an alarm clock. I actually stopped using my two real alarm clocks when I got this.

K I am gonna kick in as well that I havent seen yet.

The Multi Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) is a tool to monitor the traffic load on network-links. MRTG generates HTML pages containing graphical images which provide a LIVE visual representation of this traffic. Check http://www.ee.ethz.ch/stats/mrtg/ for an example. MRTG is based on Perl and C and works under UNIX and Windows NT. MRTG is being successfully used on many sites around the net.

Nmap ("Network Mapper") is an open source utility for network exploration or security auditing. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, although it works fine against single hosts. Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available on the network, what services (ports) they are offering, what operating system (and OS version) they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics. Nmap runs on most types of computers, and both console and graphical versions are available. Nmap is free software, available with full source code under the terms of the GNU GPL.

And almost ALL tools from http://sysinternals.com/
Esp. TCPview, BGinfo, ProcExp, Regmon and Filemon
you can usually get PRO versions on Winternals.com

have fun

Best freeware hands down is DVDShrink

It allows you to copy any DVD to a DVD-R. It will compress for you to shrink it to 4.7GB and it will either just do the full movie or whole disc.
