We are in our new house and I have some questions. We have a network box in the master closet with 13 network cables ran out for either phone or networking. However there are only 2 network Jacks in the house. I assume they are ran for rj31 for optional alarm etc but I am not sure where they go.
Down in the basement I found 1 loose wire behind a blank plate, but no matter how I wire the jack I can't get anything out of it. Is there a wireless continuity meter or device for tracking wires? The previous owner said he had "blue wires" ran to every room in the house but he isn't sure what Jacks they are behind or where they go.
Any recommendations for tracking these down?
**edit**
We won't be using the phone lines we use voip so I have all the cat5 into a large switch so they all should be live when I track them down.
You need a cable toner. Basically you hook up a small battery operated box on one end that sends out a signal. You then go to the other end with a wand and touch each of the cables until you hear the signal.

Thanks dude! I knew it had to exist I was hoping something existed for following leads thru finished walls like you can do with AC that way I can locate where the endless runs go to, this will work perfect!
It's nice being able to take over the whole basement I have 1100 sq ft for my recording studio and home theater and bar area. We took forever finding the right spot and almost got a farm but this is perfect. Just want to find all the network wire and I don't want to start punching holes in walls lol
