Wildly inefficient. Once you get used to toggle smooth scroll, you'll never use a mouse again without it. It's second only to thumb buttons in terms of amazing usefulness.
In fact, it's funny, I remember making these same arguments about thumb buttons on mice and being able to middle-click as well. The same idiotic arguments were made about workarounds and "not needed them."
There must be a term for that sort of thing.
