black prism any better than the way of shadows by weeks? i liked the coming of age main char style but his combat sequences were retarded... "he spun his blade and 36 armored knights fell dead" i can't stand over-powered main characters and enjoy detailed fights (salvatore style)
 
Yeah, I think part of the appeal of the Dresden Files is that he gets the shit beat out of him constantly.

I've got it sitting on my desk based on Dac's first recommendation of it. I didn't like the heavy handedness of good/evil in the way of the shadows books. Supposedly this one is more well written.

You have to also know that it was Brent Weeks first books. He finished all three of the way of shadows trilogy before even being published (they released 2 weeks apart).

Black Prism is his more "mature" book in terms of his skill. His style though just fits really well with me. He keeps the pace very fast, and doesn't really emphasize anything dull. I wouldn't say his first night angel trilogy was 10/10, but it was a page turner and a complete trilogy that released at once is awesome.

basically black prism starts off with the biggest tropes, "oh god this character" feeling from bad fantasy books, but as you read it it just gets more and more awesome. Don't read any summaries/reviews imo as most contain huge spoilers.

has anyone read peter hamilton's night's dawn trilogy? reality dysfunction / neutronium alchemist / naked god

i only recently started some of hamilton's books and liked it.. but was hesitant to dive into such a huge story

Yeah the Night Angel series was a page turner, I liked it overall, but it just had a few things I didn't like. I'm an easy reviewer in the first place. If I finish the book it must have some redeeming quality.

About the only book I haven't finished because it sucked beyond recognition (within the last 10 years) is The Wanderer's Tale by David Bilsborough

I agree with this assessment. The story stays with you, and to me, that is my measure of what is great vs what is good.

And this is head and shoulders above the shadows trilogy.

Yes. I read it after having read, and VERY much enjoyed his Commonwealth duology (this was before the Void trilogy was released).

I recommend the Commonwealth series', and his 1-off Fallen Dragon.

reading neutronium alchemist now, i thought reality dysfunction was really good. i thought void trilogy + commonwealth saga were amazing, better than nights dawn so far.

I preferred the Commonwealth Saga too, that's not to say Night's Dawn isn't very good too though.

very interesting position... im kinda with you on it because it is sort of creepy and hard to focus clearly... a good but hard book most say was his WORST of the series.
