Surely you've put the wrong bit in spoilers there? lol

Either way, good to know my memory isn't as addled as I had believed.

See though that's the stuff that bothers me about Banks, he has all this exposition that doesn't really mean much to the main story.

Look at player of games. The first like 3/4 of that novel is somewhat meaningless.

Agreed. He does tend to waffle, but you have to admit, it's well written waffle.

there are other things that bother me even more about Banks' sci-fi stuff (chopping and changing between characters/timelines and leaving you to work out wtf is going on with very few clues to help - see 'Transition' and 'Use of Weapons'), although i still keep reading it...

after recently reading Peter Hamilton's 'The Reality Dysfunction', my limit for wading through reams of semi-relevant fluff has increased hugely, and Banks' waffle no longer seems like a chore

See, that's one of the reasons I like Banks. He doesn't feel the need to guide you through the story by the hand.

I've only read the Commonwealth saga, haven't got onto Nights Dawn (on the shelf) or Void trilogy (awaiting purchase) yet but I didn't find there to be too much waffle in those...and as you know they are BIG books.

i dunno i don't usually consider myself the kind of reader who needs a lot of hand holding

i'm just not used to being like 'wtf is going on!? which character are we following now? or is it a new one? are we in the past or the present?' ...and i guess i resent it ;]

Yea, first one is quite good. Second one is not as good. It gets too rediculous and uses gimmicks from the first book. Still a pretty good read though.

I liked Lies of Locke too. I glanced through the second book and it was too much of the same.

Anyone one have new books to report? I think I have read most of the books in this thread and need something on this crappy raining day!

Whoa, I will be looking for the new Vinge. I've read most of his work, all the way back to The Witling.

I enjoyed the Revelation Space books, too, but damn, that guy has a lot of wind. Most of them could have been shorter, IMHO.

Checked out Stross yet? In particular:
Singularity Sky
Iron Sunrise

Thanks for encouraging me to stick it out. Really got into it during the 2nd book. Just started the Memories of Ice today.

I just found one of my old school Battletech books, Engarde before the clans came. I think I will read this series again.
