I have two goals in life, one to never go to S. America or Africa. This only reinforces that.

I think it's funny that people believe that piranha are "vicious killers" that can kill livestock and humans.

They mostly scavenge or attack wounded fish. I'm fairly certain there has never been a documented case of piranha inflicting even serious injury upon a human (although they do sometimes bite and can certainly draw blood.)

In any case:
This thread is bull****.

I would have zero problems getting into water with a school of piranha.
They're Characins, for Christ's sake.

I am talking about this with a friend. The thing I pointed out is why would they just attack his head and hand while completely avoiding meaty parts of a human body like the butt or stomach? Still pretty messed up either way be it a piranha attack or not.

I thought it was a seasonal thing, like in South America when the water begins to recede to drought like conditions and food sources become more scarce then you don***8217;t want to go anywhere near piranha.

How to avoid being eaten

1. Piranhas are only found in certain rivers in the Amazon basin. Avoid swimming in South America, unless you have to. If you must bathe there, fill a bucket and wash on land. But look out for Centromochus!

2. Piranha attacks are greatest during the dry season when water levels are lowest and the fish breed, resulting in thousands of hungry young piranhas in the water.

3. Human attacks are most common in areas where human densities are highest in the water, such as popular swimming spots.

4. Noise and splashing attracts piranhas, so try to avoid making a commotion while you're taking a dip. Piranha most commonly attack children for this reason.

5. If you're a menstruating woman, don't swim in the water, as any leaking blood may attract piranhas. In Amerindian villages, women in menstruation are not allowed to bathe for this reason, says Mol.

6. Don't throw dead fish, offal or other food into the water. Piranhas are not strictly carnivorous, so any food in the water might attract them into the area.

7. Piranha attacks are not isolated incidents. If you spot any signs erected by locals saying "Warning Piranhas", it's probably sensible to avoid bathing there.

8. When they grow legs and walk on land you're ****ed either way.

For more information see the paper: Mol JH (2006) - Attacks on humans by the piranha Serrasalmus rhombeus in Suriname. Studies on Neotropical Fauna and Environment, December 2006; 41(3): 189-195.

They wouldn't.

About the only way piranha would eat a person is if the person was already dead.

And they wouldn't just strip the least meaty part of the body and leave the rest at that.

If you nerdlings want a reason to not go to South America, go look up the candiru.
That is a fish that you should be afraid of.
Because I'd much rather die than deal with what some unfortunate men have had to endure from that.

Watched a discovery channel special on the Amazon and an attempt at cataloging all the different species of Piranha.

They showed the biologist jump in the water with a bunch of the local kids and explained that Pirahna do not feed on humans. They eat old, sick, weak, dead fish. They are not attracted to humans or other mammals at all.
