This article is classic. Old preview of Tribes. Gives you an idea of the time and how much the game would change gaming. Its funny how they refer to it as a battle deathmatch game. Even back then folks didnt know how to define something other than deathmatch. Tribes changed that.

... Time for this effing community to get together to play T1 in one last ladder showdown for an X800 prize for the winning team.

I'll donate the cards if someone can get the ladder up.

Starsiege Tribes is Gold
Sierra says team-based deathmatch game will ship by month's end.
December 18, 1998 - Two years of hard work turned to celebration last night, as the Starsiege Tribes team over Dynamix put the finishing touches on their game.

"All of us worked until midnight last morning and drove the last build to the airport to get the final candidate on the first plane to Seattle," said Scott Youngblood, lead designer on the project. "When we returned to the office, everyone just sat around and stared blankly at their computers, until word came in. Then, upon hearing the news, there was an uproar heard around Eugene!"

Sierra believes the game could revolutionize online deathmatching, as it offers a form of team-based, squad level combat not found in most shooter games.

"When this game hits the hard drives of consumers, multiplay as we know it today, will change forever," said Jeff Tunnell, executive producer and co-founder of Dynamix. "Squad play is the new kid in town and for all other games in the category, it's catch-up time. If you don't believe me, try it for yourself."

Sierra will make 250,000 copies of the game to ship to retailers.
