well, it really depends on the type of stage. today for example was mostly flat, so the GC contender teams didn't do much work to bring back the breakaway. that was up to the sprinter teams (HTC, garmin, sky, lampre) to bring the break back. now, they "sacrifice" the workers to bring the break back and string out the peloton to lead out (or deliver) their sprinter to the line, usually withing 300 to 200 meters out. obviously today it worked great for garmin, even though HTC did all the work but it looked like mark renshaw lost cav and it got messy.

the tour is usually flat stages for the first week, then the last 2 weeks are mountainous (alps and pyreneese) and the sprinters just try to make the cut so they don't get DQ'd. i think they have to roll in like 20 or 30 mins after the first guy crosses the line on a stage.

i dont know how they sustain such a high level of endurance for so long though

when you ride in a large group its a lot easier. that said, the tour is easily the fastest overall speed of any stage race. towards the finish where they hold like 75kph is just... bleh.

heres my reply for the good of mankind :

Quote:
the best and easiest answer is to go to your local bike store and tell them what kind of bike you have and what conditions you ride in. they'll sell you either a wet lube or a dry lube. the money you spend at the lbs will be slightly more than amazon but after shipping you'll break even. you will also feel good for supporting the local bike shop ( a very good thing).

i use this: Amazon.com: Finish Line WET Bicycle Chain Lube 2oz Drip Squeeze Bottle: Sports & Outdoors

i only ride that bike on the road and usually not in the rain.

you may want to invest in a chain cleaner (they're all the same so i won't recommend a particular one). a clean chain not only shifts better but it lasts longer and keeps the rest of the compenents involved in shifting in better condition (which saves you $ in the long term)

last thing: use half as much lube as you think you need and never use wd40 on anything. it's hard to not have enough lube and very easy to have too much.

keep riding, that makes me happy

Good reminder Soup.

Little stuff like lube, tubes, bottles, etc. should always be purchased from LBS.

GT85 for the cleaning of your chain, prolink or white lightning for the lube then wipe the excess with a rag
