For a private individual, that's all fine and well, and you're absolutely right.

But as a public individual, you can't ignore what's being said about you. Perception is reality; if others shape how the world perceives you, then that becomes reality. In this case, it means those perceptions destroy your social circles and any ability to get work in a fickle industry.
