Hm apparently chrome has a problem with the "Effect.Appear" command in scriptaculous, but for the life of me I can't find a work around for it :/

I get this cool message on occasion in firefox:

Warning: file_get_contents(../cache/forum_news_dynamic.html) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in [path]/forumdisplay.php(111) : eval()'d code on line 40

I refresh and it goes away.

threads active in the last 2 days between 20 - 50 replies for upcoming, over about 70(?) for hot topics

i'm open to considering new methodologies.

the news stories logic is based on bumps and online users

havent used scriptaculous, but i know jquery and extjs pretty well. if you have an ID assigned to that div / span, try to append a $('#div-id-here').show()

or perhaps Effect.Show()

maybe chrome doesnt acknowledge the .appear function? been noticing that bug for a while, though.

fwiw, facebook fadeIns do the same **** on chrome. i see them constantly change how they fade in images, sometimes breaking it, sometimes fixing it.

haha happened upon your post at

Prototype Scriptaculous Effect.Appear anomaly in Chrome/Safari - WebDeveloper.com

did you add the height css declaration inline or via stylesheet to test? if using the sheet, perhaps try an !important flag?

edit: perhaps remove the "display:none" inline on the div and instead apply a "x-hidden" css class or something to that effect.
