Has anyone ever built any speakers? I have been thinking about building some just for a project, something to do. Maybe some small ones for the computer desk or something. Anyone have any experience or tips?

I was an audio dork for a while after building my home theater. Got into it and built all the speakers I now use. What do you wonder?

I've kind of looked into what is required to build a decent set of speakers. Looks like just basic stuff. Is there any type of wood better to use than another?

I am thinking about buying a starter kit from Parts Express. Just to see what it is like to put it all together.

I have never built my own. There is this guy I was looking at the other day if you want to get fancy.

Aren***8217;t good speakers fairly inexpensive these days? I can think of many more constructive things to do if I had spare time.

There sure is. And lucky for you it’s cheap. MDF aka medium density fiberboard is what you want. There’s a lot of reasons it’s the standard but the main reasons are it doesn’t resonate. Also, it’s very uniform so one sheet of MDF will have the same resonance as any other sheet making it predictable. Two pieces of hardwood would be totally different in density, resonance, etc. It also helps that MDF doesn’t expand and contract in different humidities and temps, etc.

Ehhh they can be but it’s obviously in the eye of the beholder. If you can build them, you can build hundreds or thousand dollar speakers for a fraction less. Speakers are very high margin products from name brands.

I take it you mean building cabinets not actually fabricating the baskets magnets cones and diaphrams.

I have built tons of speaker cabinets.. There are a ton of forums that cover this is gross detail and there are programs you can run to perfect the cabinet dimentions etc...

Build some plate speakers. Parts are cheap and evidently sound great.
