It's likely he didn't even say it at all.

I sat here for an hour and finally came up with the German as owning the fish. I guess Einstein is smarter than I am.

Does the riddle necessitate that each house own also only owns a single type of pet?

Yes Lineage one pet/drink/color/etc. per nationality and differing from all others.

You could just translate it into numbers if you felt like it. So that in the end you get 5 sequences of 6 numbers corresponding to: nationality, house color, drink, pet, house number order, smoke. (Of course you'd have to assign a number 1-5 to each of the things.) Then you just figure out which set of 5 sequences will differ from each other in each place and still satisfy the requirements.

That way would be way more ****ing boring to solve. I'm kind of curious if it's easier or harder though. Though I don't feel like going through that crap all over again.

I think it's the German. Took me a while to put together all the pieces though.

It's the german. It took me about a half an hour to solve but once I was able to break it all down into a table I was able to solve it.

It's rather unsurprising that most TWers can solve it though. As painful as it is to admit, the average IQ on these forums is pretty high.

uhm, i thought i remember the whole point of this riddle is to work "mental experiments" which is what Einstein excelled at. Using pen and paper is basically cheating. although its been awhile and i could be thinking about something else

in less than ten minutes I could knock on each door and just ask them.

"do you own a fish? do you know who does?"

next house.

just like a scientist. head in the clouds, not thinking in practical terms.

the point where you have to use like 4 pieces of info at the same time was the hardest part, everything else falls into place before and after that

wasn't too difficult

9. The Norwegian lives in the first house.
2. The Swedish man keeps dogs as pets.
6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.

Not enough information

First house can mean many different things and is arbitrary. Rearing birds is supposed to mean they are your pet I guess, yet is explicitly stated before then on dogs etc. If the question relies on my own interpretation of the question and does not provide full explanation than any answer I come up with will be pure guess.
