How is this something that should cause the ejection of a player? I probably see 3-4 bad targeting calls a week, and another 3-4 that are clear targeting that aren't called or reviewed.

Rule really makes no sense.
I'm with you here 100% and glad you mentioned it. It's not uniformly applied, and the ejections cause catastrophic results for the teams. It's insanely frustrating. The fact that it's SO ****ING SUBJECTIVE makes it maddening. It has had profound influence on the W/L of a game. And it is never, ever consistent.

Exhibit #23187238: USC vs WSU. This is WSU's only loss, otherwise they'd be undefeated and the conference's only playoff contender now. Here's the play:

Barstool UCLA on Twitter:
( ^ PS HK can we imbed Twitter on here yet?)

Was it called? No. WSU turns the ball over on downs instead of having a 1st and goal with 1 min left in the 4Q. Far, far more ambiguous 'targeting' calls have been flagged. Mike Leach lost his mind and called out the conference.

Washington States Mike Leach called out Pac-12 officiating

Quote:
Leach, in a text to Pac-12 vice president of officiating David Coleman, wrote on Sept. 25 about the targeting no-call against USC: ***8220;Woodie is a total coward and is afraid of USC. I look forward to telling him in person.***8221;

In texts to Dixon and Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott, Leach blasts the league for not backing up its public posturing about commitment to player safety. Leach wrote to Dixon in the wake of the Gustin hit: ***8220;Don***8217;t ever waste my time, making me sit through some sanctimonious speech or demonstration on player safety or targeting if you are going to continue to alibi what happened last Friday.***8221;
If this rule MUST exist, don't make the penalty a ****ing ejection. Players work all spring and summer to play on 11-13 saturdays of the year, and to have it pulled from them under the guise of 'safety' is an embarrassment.

I hate it.

Or you could argue his point. Which I wholeheartedly agree with rather than coming in with 'Reeeeeeeeeeee'

Dabo Swinney is already running up the score, handing the ball to defensive lineman Christian Wilkins for a first half touchdown run against Florida State.
