News: Tribes: Vengeance Skinning Contest

take a look at the file they included..

the light parts appear to stand up, the dark parts appear to recede.

use a sharp edge if you want it to appear cookie cutter, blur the edge if you want it rounded.

Doesn't really work for small details too well.

attempt ala icehockey goalie by Gavrok in the euro forums, just playing around, but could look pretty nice when done :p

cool, is there a way to preview this in 3dsmax?
I found the material editor to apply the skins.

i was under the impression that a normal map was full color, not greyscale... right from the get go i was surprised to see that title of that file because it looks like a bump map.

this is what i thought a normal map looked like

lol rere's.. they supplied u with the 'un-processed' height/normal map..once u finish it, use the nvidia tools/plugins to convert it to the snazzy coloured version... of course u dont know this having NOT read the readme supplied and links included :p

Actually im not sure if they want u to submit a converted normal tho (as they may do it later with their own tools), perhaps colosus or irrational can clarify if they want teh au natural grey heightmap like they provided or a coloured filtered vers.

Ahh, so that's what the nvidia tools do.
I watched the video for riddick and when they talked about the normal map being RGB I was like ummm this is greyscale.

wanted to toss this idea of tigerstripe camo out onto the board and get some feedback.. not sure if I like it enough to continue.

Well. There they are.. Obviously my normal maps aren't all fully edited yet..
May scrap it and work on my other idea though.
Let me know what you all think. First time attempting to skin like this.
