I still play ED. It's kinda like heroin. I only play solo mode. You will want to end up paying for it since that will allow you to get the better ships and land on planets. However. the free game is enough to get you going. I earned my first billion in free mode. Then, I upgraded, got better ships and went farming for **** to get the Guardian booster and some assorted components. Made another billion. Then, jumped into an asp explorer and went the the center of the galaxy and back to Jameson. I banked a billion in exploration on that trip.
I bought a Krait Phantom and outfited that and ****ed off far from everything. I have not seen another explorers name on any space I have been in for the last 300 jumps. I have no plans on returning for some time. It's peaceful out there.
I know they are talking about a big upgrade in 2021. The ability to fight and get out on planets on foot instead of the SRV. I might head back to Jameson in 2021 to bank my exploration and outfit an anaconda for the Neutron Highway.
The way I play Elite is relaxing. I don't want stupid humans involved. The devs are whacky enough.
Elite is one of the first games I ever played on a PC. It's fun to still pop in to this day and putter around.
Get the free version and have a putter. You will either get addicted or just go "meh". It's way less intense than Eve. You will get hooked on mining, or exploring or dogfighting and it's just plain relaxing.
