Sayre man arrested, accused of trying to blow up OKC bank | News OK

A Sayre man was arrested Saturday after authorities say he tried to blow up a bank in Oklahoma City.

Jerry Drake Varnell, 23, tried to detonate what he thought was a vehicle bomb Saturday at the BancFirst headquarters, 101 N Broadway, the FBI reported Monday. The device, which Varnell believed to be a bomb, was inert, officials said.

Varnell faces charges of attempting to use explosives to destroy a building in interstate commerce. In a criminal complaint, FBI investigators say Varnell initially wanted to blow up the Federal Reserve Building in Washington, D.C., with a device similar to the one used in the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building because he was upset with the government.

Why wasn't there more heard about this?

Apparently you follow the wrong news outlets. I heard about it on radio, web news sites and broadcast news last week. Maybe I'm just lucky.

He probably means why wasn't it front page TW - the only place to get REAL news

We heard about it. News report spun it as an entrapment case.

Here is yet another case of a mentally ill person having serious issues out here in society.

Bring back the state mental institution system. Way too many people that would benefit greatly from long term in-patient treatment in a secure facility are instead wandering around getting into trouble.

At least in this guy's case he'll end up in the prison psych unit and might get some of what he needs.

this was the mentally ill kid who got tricked by the FEDS into buying a truck bomb from the FBI scrap yard

yeah......that wasn't low hanging fruit

they should arrest the rest of them who play with sticks and think they are ninja warriors next
