Great info Tele.

Many people think that long-term use may induce additional wear due to lack of oil lubrication. For the crankshaft bearing half shells and the big end bearings this can translate into frequent high-speed rotary movement before a hydrodynamic film is established. During this phase of boundary lubrication, metal-to-metal contact can occur between the crankshaft surface and the bearing's sliding surface. This was not an issue while the number of engine restarts totaled what was generally understood to be a normal magnitude. However, in a vehicle with a start-stop system this effect can necessitate new technological solutions to avoid premature bearing wear, depending on the driving cycle. Consequently, future engines for start-stop applications need to be designed for 250,000 to 300,000 starts. Traditional bearing shells with aluminum or copper lining show severe wear after only 100,000 cycles.
There's always a period after a start before the oil pump gets up to operating pressures. I've been in diesel trucks with a separate electrical priming pump to eliminate this. Toyota oil filter have had check valves to keep as much oil in the pump and shorten oil starvation during start for a long time. Aftermarket filters and as far as I know other manufacturers do not.

very interesting stuff......

nice to have some actual mechanics on here

not just the worthless ramblings of teetotalers like mitch

it will be interesting to see where each make and model has specific issues after 100k miles

So yeah, if you own a Toyota, use genuine Toyota filters. They cost about the same as a cheap filter from the parts store, and you won't be wearing your engine out as much each start. A 5 pack for my Camry was 25$

My car has that too. This is how I always start the car:

-Plug phone in for AndroidAuto (music, navigation and calls)
-Start car
-Little hand brake button to OFF
-Auto stop DISABLED
-Sports mode ENABLED
-Doors LOCKED
-Drive
-Check out women in running/yoga pants
-Curse at tards
-Arrive at destination

Always.

ya, 4 me it's those and the fking 5.3L gm somehow running w/o a hitch at 357884 (but in the gm, unlike the toyota, the ignition lock is always ****ed up so u have to angle the key 2 make it turn, the interior door handles don't work, the window switches have been punched down thru the door panel, the farmer who owns it did some electrical work that has tesla rolling over in his grave and axeing edison to give him a double fist****ing, and u have to say "beetlejuice" 3 times fast while sticking ur thumb up ur bum if u want the odometer display 2 work (it will only work for like .0003 seconds anyway))

everything has a trade off as always

they traded this for fuel efficiency improvement......whether to appease EPA or California mandates.
Excellent links, tele. Thank you.

Cool idea seeing as how a gallon of gas where i live is quite expensive but I cannot help but to think that starters are not designed to start this many times. You know... planned obsolescence.

The cost of savings on fuel vs. the cost of replacing a starter? I don't drive much anymore - I average about 75 miles a week so saving on gas isn't a big concern to me.

Any of you know if this is something to be concerned with or not?
i've been hearing this a lot at intersections lately i couldn't imagine driving one. someone needs to pass a law banning >4cyl for most drivers because i wouldn't drive one of these ****boxes if my life depended on it
